Thought this was an interesting one to get the juices flowing:

A mate of mine asked me to list the 20 'true' premier league teams, the challenge was to list the premiership as it would be if you were asked to pick based on their history from the start of the premiership.

I haven't tried to put it in order yet, that bit makes it a bit trickier, but so far I have:

The ever presents:
Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Totenham, Aston Villa (I think)

Challenging for Europe sides:
Everton, Leeds, Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham

Mid table:
Birmingham, West Brom, Bolton, Fulham, Sunderland

Relegation dog fight:
Southampton, Middlesborough, Crystal Palace, Derby

What do you think, who would be in your ultimate premier league?

football didnt start with the premiership

it started properly in the 1880s when preston did the double.

I really hate this sky football started in 91ish as if nothing ever happened before FFS.

True. However my own view on the 'top-tier' teams is still very much influenced by the teams playing in the old 1st division when I first started following Spurs...

Forest, Palace, Southampton, Leeds are the main ones that spring to mind.

Sheffield Wednesday were a reasonably established top level side for quite a while as well, along with Coventry.

Plus when I started following football you also had Oldham, Luton and Notts County in the top division...though I cannot remember how long they were a part of it for.

General Football?

Thought about it, wasn't sure. Sure a mod will move if they're not happy.

I figured if people started ranking them it would be interesting to see where Spurs came, I was thinking we may be below Villa in 6th as weren't we consistently weaker in the 90's?

I still yearn for the old days of Nottingham Forest, QPR, Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton etc. Would have to have them in my "top 20 true premier league teams"

Forgot about QPR! Though I expect they will be established again pretty soon.

Interesting reading, quite a strong prem at the moment then which probably explains why teams are constantly taking points off each other.

I figured sucess would have to be part of this too, for example would you consider Blackburn a bigger premiership team than any of those above them just because they have won the thing?

Bolton have done consistently well even though they've only been in there 12 seasons, so would you put them above the likes of West Ham who probably haven't reached Europe as many times?
