From The Times 13.4.08

Sez it all really.

"When Juande Ramos looks back on his first season at White Hart Lane and examines the size of his transfer kitty, no doubt he won’t be dwelling on the Carling Cup triumph but rather Tottenham’s generosity towards the opposition once they have taken the lead, and yesterday they were handing out the presents again.

Tottenham have dropped 31 points in games where they have taken the lead, far more than any Premier League club."

I cry, I will admit it. Not a lot. Just enough

But we didn't and wouldn't have expected to, given the depth of quality right through the Premiership.

We don't have a divine right to win a game that we take the lead in - see the process of goals scored at OT yesterday.

What we do have though, is an immediate focus of a problem that requires a solution. Be it through tactics, training, fitness or personnel, that is why we have hired one of the most respected coaches in football.

How many games have we let slip at the end tho.......Fulham (a), Brum (h), Blakburn (h), ManYoo (h) etc etc.....they probably equate to half those points! Those games we should have got something from but our concentration ain't there.....

I am sure that if you use statistics for every other team outside the top 4, you would find similar amounts of points lost. (I am now expecting someone to prove me wrong.......)

I dont think we can look at points lost and say we could be 3rd/7th etc - we are where we are because unfortunately we were not good enough to beat the teams who we dropped points to.

On the subject of us letting leads go, what do you guys reckon the main reason for this is? Personally I think a few of our players lack the mental toughness to keep their composure in these situations. The main culprits being JJ, Zokora, Hudd, Dawson and Chimbo.

it's not just mental toughness, it's downright arrogance and a feeling that we are going to coast through a game when we take the lead

Can't argue with that, but it isn't the only reason...... a contributing factor must be that they just aren't good enough........

It's not a new thing, the 3-5 against Man U, the FA Cup loss to 10 man Manchester City in 2004 after being 3-0 on both occasions.

I weep.

Absolutely correct - Our players need to become ruthless and grind games out, rather than rely on 1 or 2 to save them each game.

I hope you'll forgive me while I wax lyrical for a moment:

The season 2007/08 has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Do other Spurs fans feel the way I do? Has every proud Spurs supporter, whose blood flows blue and liliywhite, had their footballing heart and soul pulled through the wringer as much as me? I don't know. All I know is that I'm exhausted.

The highs have been (metaphorically) meteoric. The Carling Cup win was the sweetest tincture to pour onto the grizzled bitterness of nine years of trophy cabinet barreness. The lows have been abyssal. The departure of BMJ was (for some of us) sour to the point of unpalatable. We watched a great man denigrated and humiliated.

And the ups and downs keep coming, sometimes within a single game. Sublime football mixed with woeful in equal measure.

So, to sum up: Season 07/08 - The Indescribable Season.

Thank you for your indulgence.

I waved my flag along with 36000 other flags at the 125 celebratory match at home to Aston Villa.

We promptly lived up to expectations by going 4-1 down by h/t with some really comical defending.

Second half with few flags still fluttering in stubborness and defiance our mob rallied and the stadium rocked when Kaboul smashed the equaliser in the embers of an enthralling gut wrenching game.

That match summed up our season for me.

The highs have been wonderful, the lows have been desperate, and the football we've played has either been awesome or downright awful, with very little in between. A real Jekyll and Hyde season and very much in keeping with our traditions. I'm expecting another rollercoaster next year as well.
