Just throwing this idea in the hat, as it’s something I’ve been discussing with the old man, and that is the possibility of trying out Trippier in midfield.
We currently have 3 LB’s in Trippier, Aurier and KWP and, as has been repeated on here as nauseum, we are lacking a ball playing midfielder alongside our DM’s.
We have Carabao Cup games upcoming, which I feel is the perfect opportunity to give KWP more game time. It’s also the perfect opportunity to see if Trippier can slot into a right sided midfield role, deep lying, where he can thread balls into the channels. You have the added bonus of Trippier already having defensive capabilities where he can either fill the hole when the fab bombs forward, or support the fb when the opposition attack that flank. You also have the option for Trippier to get down the flank himself with the fb backing him up.
His lack of pace would be less of an issue in the role and we all know he can pick a pass. I likened the role to the role Beckham had for Utd.

I’m interested to see what flaws there may be in my reasoning, or if anyone else thinks that it might just be a viable option.

Jol turned Dembele from a striker to a midfielder, Redknapp turned Bale from a LB to a winger, any reason why Poch couldn’t convert a RB into a playmaker?

just because they are on the left when you see the team sheet, they usually play as right backs:whistle:

I see no reason really trippier can’t play in midfield. The wide right role is why he got tagged “the bury beckham”. I actually think he’d make a great ball playing DM as well. I don’t think size is an issue as Kante has shown. He has the defence awareness but also the ability to pick passes from deep. With no signings this summer, wouldn’t be surprised to see poch pull some rabbits out the hat. Also with Toby staying I wouldn’t be surprised to see foyth possibly utilised in a midfield role. Real shame his pre season got messed up. But the FB to DM role has been done many times in club football before.

He's a slight defensive liability at fullback, why would we put him smack dab in the middle of the pitch?

A whole new level of intelligence is required to play in midfield especially coming from a full back position, I don't see how Trippier will make a difference if he played in that position, he's a F/WB

Midfielders cover more ground than any position on the field.

Yeah but fullbacks need to cover that “I need speed”-type ground, whereas DMs cover more start/stop ground. Think Rose and Walker compared to Dier and Wanyama- which of those pairs is faster (and needs to be)? DMs can get away with not being fleet of foot, whereas at least in the modern game for right and left backs it’s practically a prerequisite that they be speed merchants. Hell Kyle Walker fast-ed his way onto City last season; Pep didn’t exactly want him for his tactical nous.

FWIW I actually don’t think Trippier would make a good DM (CM yes however) but at the same time I can see the logic.

Yeah trippier surely is faster and more nimble than Dier. The ground you cover as a DM is completely different to a FB. Trippier weakest point is if a flyer knocks it past him in a 20 Utd sprint. You rarely get that situation in the centre of midfield.
