Just going through some of the games I went to way back when. It is 30 years almost to the day that this match took place Millwall
Division 226-Dec-7716,644 awaywin3 - 1 Duncan, Lee, Taylor

What do our old timers remember about what turned out to be a very interesting season?
BTW going to that Millwall match almost turned out to be one of the worst decisions of my life!:eek:mg:

Bolton away.. Peter Reid scores last minute for Bolton to get a 1-0.

Who would have thought Spurs would lose in the last minute of an important match.

I remember .... winning 4-0 at home to Blackburn around about this time of year - it was Glenn Hoddle's birthday that day; loads of goals; 51000+ at home to Bolton in the league; a great swerving goal for Hoddle against Bolton in the cup I think but did we lose the replay: losing 3-2 at home to Coventry in the League Cup (they were div 1); crap defence; Keith Osgood thought he was good, kicked up a fuss about something so Burkinshaw promptly sold him; lots of 3-3 draws that would have been easier to win; competition with Brighton, Southampton and Sunderland for the promostion spots - did we eventually finish 3rd despite being easily the best team in the division? Maybe Bolton were up there too? 9-0 at home to Bristol Rovers. Barry Daines in goal. haha. Terry Naylor, Don McAllister; and a great time was had by all.

How did we get relegated that season? Were we dead and buried early on or were we unlucky like West Ham were a few season back? Please explain in detail for those who were too young to remember.

Oh and I bet it was a tough away trip to Millwall, as they had the top firm in those days.

I remember freezing my teets off when we played Mansfield Town at home. I got some photos of that game somewhere, i'll see if I can dig 'em out.

Looking back Spurs were actually lucky to avoid relegation for a couple of seasons in a row. One game that saved us comes to mind was the one against Leeds.
Division 128-Apr-7549,886 homewin4 - 2 Knowles (2, 1pen), Conn, Chivers
Leeds were a great team then and in this game every time we got in front Leeds put together a move and scored just to show what they could have done if they were bothered to. 'Stewards Enquiry' would not have been out of order against Revies dodgepots in that match:)

The highs and lows back in them days...
Top dog most of the season, needing to get a result of sorts on the last day, playing against teams like Mansfield,Blackpool, Hull - oh my gawd.

Those awaydays on Herbies coaches were both good and bad, like a black comedy, we thought we were too good to be there but the previous season was a sad display of a downward spiral.

I had a great year as a season ticket holder. went to all the games home and away except for one away. Was bitten by a police horse at Stoke, got chucked in any old where at Brighton away by the police, and escaped with only a few bruises. final game at Saint's was mad - rubbish game, had kittens every time they got into our half - wonderful party at Andover Spurs Supporters on the way back. Going to Millwall was a bit tricky as 'Harry the Dog' promised to take on any spurs Supporter who dared to cross London Bridge (or was it Battersea?). Nevertheless there were plenty of his like-minded compatriots about. The 'football special' trains were crap, overcrowded and took forever to get anywhere. Great times had by all. Hello to anyone who stood in the standing enclosure at that time.

What a year this was. I was only 2 but i clearly remember getting the train down to Sunderland on my own. I remember the locals chanting at me and calling me a virgin. I think i told them all to go wibble and they were like 'you don't know what you're saying'.

I remember going to the cashpoint that hadn't been invented yet and withdrawing £80 and waving it in front of the locals. I put £20 on Spurs to win 12 -1 and the cashier was like 'ID please' and i was like 'Fuck you. Fuck you right up your northern cockhole' before chucking the £20 at him and telling him to go buy a house with it.

Man, the club afterwards was amaaazing. I pulled this right dodgy Mackem, must've been about 4 or 5. Looked much younger though. Went back to hers and i made her recite the double winning team while i stuffed her face with cookies. What a laugh that day was, i must've got well drunk cos i remember shitting my pants and stinking like a local.

Memories.

Nice anecdote there Bomber, and very brave to put half a weeks wages on a wager. £20 would have got you 80 pints at £0.25p a pint of lager  (At London prices - not the namby pamby Northern ales which were about thruppence)

Blimey, the things you remember. I knew a girl called Jennifer, looked like she'd been beaten with the ugly stick and had made too many visits to the pie shop.

Anyhoo, surprise, surprise, she got this job walking around the pitch selling peanuts and crisps or whatever to the fans. Can't remember the game, but as she walked around the ground, the fans were singing keep your kit on for the lads. Nasty, but at the time funny.

And I thought Neil McNab and John Duncan were the dogs, loved it when big dunc scored.

First season for me at the age of 10. I remember the Percy Dalton peanut man selling his nuts on the shelf.

I remember the Mansfield, Orient, Blackpool, Notts County,Cardiff City and Bristol Rovers. Now that is quality opposition!

Ha Ha I knew we must of met in a previous life. Was you on the coach that stayed at Whizzies hotel in Hastings after the Brighton game? Most of the people on Herbies coach now drink in the Coach and Horses. On my way to the pub will reminice more later, ahhh drunken memories.

Sadly I didn't make the Brighton one. I had not long been married then, so stopouts were out of the question.

I have to say it was always an experience with "Johnny Herbert tours."
Swindon in the FA we broke down on the way there. fairly regular occurence.

In the eighties it was usually our own transport or we went with Big Bill and his Thomas Cook coaches - real toilets on them not "piss in the bucket and throw it out through the hole in the floor which was for prop shaft access jobbies"

Happy days

Haven't seen Joey or my old muckers for about ten years or so.

ALSO
Just remembered I was working on the buses No.s 9, 11 & 47 out of Dalston Garage at London Fields so sometimes I had to miss a game here or there due to work

I was there and as I recall neil was the manager and after bolloxing up the whole season the team he played for that game was basically Bill Nicholson's, result - success!
He fecked off to the scum after that where they were happy to play his brand of boring monotonous football.
