Today marks the 30th anniversary of the signings of Ardiles and Villa. Signings which amazed and excited the whole of English football. Not only were the signings very brave, but they were an absolute major success and set the catalyst for many other foreign stars to grace our leagues.

I was a 10 year old lad and remember the annoucement like it was yesterday. I have such fond memories of them both and have listed my top 5 below

1. Villa's debut goal v Forest
2. Ardiles extra time goal in FA Cup v Man Utd at Old Trafford when Hoddle went in goal
3. The obvious Ricky Villa's winner v Man City 1981 FA Cup final
4. Seeing Maradona at Ardiles testimonial
5. Ardiles intelligence and integrity to overcome the abuse he suffered after the Falklands war.

Strange, looking back and comparing it to these days when signing internationals is commonplace, and not just for those teams in the top flight. Not that we've signed any WC winners recently.
How the deal happened:

The Klinsmann and Dimitrescu in 1994 was nearly as amazing , as Klinsmann had been a WC winner and Dimi had a fantastic 1994 WC in the USA. What made it even more satsifying was that at this time we we docked I believe 15 points and banned from the FA cup.

Klinsmann graced the PL that season and rightly received the recognition at the end of it for his qualities, both in terms of on and off the pitch. It was a shame it only lasted one season.

didnt gilberto win the world cup? although he can hardly be called a massively exciting signing. Would be great if the board knew about this and wanted to commemorate it with another double signing!

Based on newspaper speculation, it will be more likely be a quintet signing!!. Bentley, Capel, Ferdinand, Podolski and Van der Vaart.....etc

Or they could just mark it with the Bostock tribunal news. Nah, not quite the same :)

We MUST believe....and we will! It would be a great 'shot in the arm' to bring in a few 'quality' players....just to 'mark' the day....! Maybe that is why we have been soooo quiet on the 'market' this month? I am not a 'creature of habit' but I am prepared to be IF it means a Press Room Full of NEW Yid's! COYS
