posted in another thread but got swamped in (another) personal argument.

I don't think we'll ever use it as HR really does prefer 442. But I think this offers us more because:
-Thudd's not good enough defensively alone. Sandro offers that.
-Modric ends up having to play a little deep
-Sandro Thudd Modric could play great triangles the way we used to in the days of Anderton/Poyet/Redknapp but with better playing staff
-Thudd could play more of his passes without worrying about chasing back, swtiching play, directing our attack whilst Modric can get into those spaces on move us forward
-Walker could replace Lennon and do a job on the right
-3 at the back gives our fragile defence a little more protection

Any thoughts?

I wanna party like it's 1996-8.

Wing backs just don't work.

I see the reason (to accomodate all three CMs), but I think we're just going to have to make a call between Huddlestone and Sandro (generally Hudd, Sandro for tougher away games).

That might win on the PS3 but it will be a disaster on Ramos proportions in the Prem!

There was a thread about a week ago talking about variations on 3-5-2 as it had been said that Redknapp was trying it in training.

Really think it could work if everyone knew their place in it. The formation you have posted though is really this...

Gomes
Kaboul Gallas Dawson Bale
Lennon Huddlestone Sandro Modric
van der Vaart
Pavlyuchenko

That really is a 4-4-2 again!

Anyone who says it doesnt work and would be a disaster (not naming names) are full of shit. Smelly shit. Shit that makes a vegetarians poo smell nice.

Its all about the coaching, and as nicdic said, when defending it would look like an ordinary 442 but when attacking Sandro would drop back as the 4th CB with Kaboul and Gallas going wide. It works. Several managers have used it with success.

If it were to be a true 3-5-2 variance, then Gallas would be the right centre back and Kaboul the left.

Yeah, it still works.
It wont be as strong, but take Bale & Lennon out of our usual 442 and the same happens.

would like to see it tried in a pre-season friendly, or a variation of it

loved some of the football we played under hoddle, despite it all ending terribly. we had a reasonable team, too thinking about it.

yes, i think my motivation is to accomodate all of thudd + sandro as well as find a role distinct enough for modric + VdV. i really think we sorta need both pairs in a team as they offer fantastic qualities (though i wonder if sandro can step up in confidence + distribution to usurp Thudd...)

we seem to lack a little creativity in our recent matches and have looked bereft of ideas at times with the 442 / 4411 shape.

That could work but I thought Benni was brilliant last week and needs to play to give Bale the freedom to get at Sagna who has not been the best RB this season
