Based only on performances at world cups, how strong a balanced 11 can we put out? Any suggestions gratefully received. I'm thinking some sort of Diamond:

Pat Jennings

Mel Hopkins
Alf Ramsey
Gheorge Popescu
Christian Zeige

Ossie Ardilles
Edgar Davids
Danny Blachflower
Glenn Hoddle

Paul Gascoigne
Gary Lineker

Thoughts?

What about Klinsmann? More WC goals than both Linekar and Gazza and also won a world cup.

Without doubt one of the most talented players to grace the English game, but based on solely World Cup performances (bearing in mind it was before my time,), perhaps drop Hoddle, move Gazza in to CM and put Jurgen up front....

If anyone wants to educate me on Hods world cups though and tell me i'm being ignorant then please do it by all means.

I'm too young to remember '86 unfortunately (another child of Italia '90). From what i've read Hoddle was very good until he was moved out of positon for the Argentina game, but was he good enough to displace one of the other players? I don't know.

The other major omission is Waddle, I guess.
