I'm 26 this guy was my idol growing up. Had 7 on my shirt and played Right Midfield everyone would ask why? Is it because of Beckham and I'd be mah dude! Darren fucking Anderton!!! Signed

One of favourite yet frustrating players ever. He seemed so supremely talented - his delivery was incredible. Such a shame is injury record meant he could never show his true potential.

Like Ledley, I suspect had he not had such troubles, he may have been bought from us much earlier on. Whatever the reasons, he played for the club for 12 years and deserves a massive and hearty thanks.

Petition signed and shared.

Mentioning him and Ledley in the same breath is an insult

Anderton was a decent player. Nothing more

Week in week out he was pretty disappointing. I know I was there watching him every bloody week, strolling around for the most part (flicking his hair!!)

Fergy may have looked at him for a few seconds but to think he would have actually signed him is laughable

Oh and by the way with Darren Anderton for 12 seasons our average league position was 11th!!!

And I stand by my statement that he was better for England than Tottenham

Scored 1 in 7.6 for Spurs and 1 in 4.3 for England. How does that happen?

Signed.

I find it absolutely bizarre anyone would be somehow against this, just doesn't make any sense.

Nothing like a bit of attention seeking.

I would rather forget the time when he played for us than celebrate it. We were average at best, and that's me being biased, during that time. No need for reminders......

It just really annoys me that he is being painted as this fantastic ex Spurs player that has been very harshly treated

In reality he was pretty ordinary in a Spurs shirt, made a small fortune during his career with us and there are many many many former Spurs players who are in much more need of our thoughts & help a hell of a lot more than DA

It's got nothing to do with helping him out financially. Stop being so fucking petty.

Did he shag your mum behind your dads back or something?

Most players put money from testimonials towards charity rather than stick it in their pockets.
He was at the club for 12 years and probably had plenty of opportunities to leave in that time, but didn't.
It's irrelevant how good of a player he was for us. Granted, he was no Ginola, but he also was no Dominguez!!!

Deserves a testimonial as far as I'm concerned.

it's in one of Fergie's myriad of books that he wanted to sign him. And Anderton is quoted as saying it was happening and he decided to stay. I believe Kanchelskis was coming the other way.

You don't rate him, fair enough. But I prefer to listen to this man, Mr Edward Sheringham...

"Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have this understanding at Liverpool where if one of them has the ball, the other knows where they are going. I had that same understanding with Anderton. It was uncanny really, the best understanding I had in my career. As soon as Anderton had the ball I knew where he was going; as soon as I had it, I knew he would be available.

To those who say ‘how can you put him in?’ the biggest compliment I could pay to ‘Shaggy’, as he was known, was that all the Man Utd boys on England duty would say: ‘He’s great. Let’s sign him up.’ He was rated that highly. Sir Alex Ferguson tried but a transfer never materialised."

Where was our average league position when Klinsmann was here?

How dare people like things.

It must really get in your craw when someone says they like bacon and eggs when clearly steak + lobster is clearly superior.

If you feel there are other people who need Spurs' support then go actually do something about it. You know, just like the people who have set up this petition then. Instead of keyboard warrioring it up in a forum, you may actually get something productive done if you care about it as much as you let on.

Considering how much better we are now than we were in the 90s, there are still several players on our books not fit to the Anderton's laces. He would offer far more than any of Sissoko, Nkoudou, Lamela, Son.

Oh and goals might've been low but he's in the top ten assist providers in premier league history.
