It's the internet. You're always going to get the odd person who childishly uses the spam rating in some kind of vendetta, or spams everything they disagree with. In my experience though these users are very much in the minority and it would be a shame to completely overhaul the whole ratings system - something I think adds value to the site - because a small minority are abusing it.

Would it possible to put a built-in cap on the amount of negative reps one is allowed to give out - like 3 a day or less? That would stop the culprits being able to go on neg repping binges - or at least slow them down. It would also encourage them to use the rating more carefully - I mean they might not want to use up all their precious spam ratings in one go in case they find something (or someone) else they want to spam later.

Very difficult to police especially when transfers are quiet and there are no games on and so many posts in the itk and player forums are just chatting shite for the sake of it.
There should be a clear boundary between trying to self police some of the threads and going completely spam crazy just cos someone disagreed with a post lol. Sometimes you’d think the threads are full of people on their school holidays.

Spamming posts doesn’t self police. Asking people nicely helps, but doesn’t guarantee it.

1) “Ratings wars” are as childish as people who spam posts for no reason.
2) As always, people take ratings far too seriously. It’s an internet forum, ffs.

The fact that this thread needed to be made is wild. Everyone in this sub forum should take a long, hard look at themselves.

I like the ratings system. Some of the people that use it...not so much.

For me I think it is the consistent malevolent spammers are the most annoying.

The ones I refer to are those lurkers never have input to any thread on this site.

I honestly believe they are not in tune with the vibe and/or the online personalities that have evolved in here.

I’d spam ur arse for this if I wasn’t a lurker :sneaky:

While we’ve got your attention, I’m not an admin so sending me requests to unban you from the transfer forum is the equivalent to sending thoughts and prayers to the victims of shootings. Not going to make a jot of difference.

So much logic here it makes me  surely the system can report anyone blindly giving out a load of spams against the same poster within hours of each other????

That’s for you techie twats to sort out ????

The forum is immaterial - it's about respect. Disrespect is no respecter (pun intended) of borders or media. Be it on an internet forum or face-to-face, we all expect a basic level of respect.

I try to be respectful to people no matter where I engage with them. God knows I'm not always successful and often have to remove foot from mouth; and when the red mist descends the level of rudeness and disrespect I bring to bear can be downright vicious. But only when I'm provoked.

What grates isn't the rating itself, it's the idea that what one has said is worthless. When you cast that kind of judgement on someone, it can make them hesitate. Outside of this recent flame-war (according to my profile) I'd given out 15 negative ratings. In 12 years! Compared to 13,000 positive ones. It's what you do - you encourage people with ratings to get them to talk, so you have a conversation going. Someone posts, they get a positive rating and so they feel confident in posting again. It adds to the site, it adds substance, it makes it a joy to read.

There are some incredibly funny people on this board - some who have had me crying with laughter. But I've seen their posts given Spam ratings. What if that funny poster hesitates to post again because they're worried they'll be Spammed again? For some people, it matters. We should have enough respect for each other to know we don't all sing from the exact same hymn sheet. And someone who has a thinner skin could shy away from contributing because they don't want to risk another negative rating. So they go silent even though they may have something positive to contribute. Don't we all lose when that happens?

We all have something in common. That commonality should be enough to at least offer each other some basic level of respect.

It also seems that if you are positive at all regarding transfers you get an optimistic rating from people. They now seem to go hand in hand.

Optimism is a positive thing. As far as ratings is concerned. Just embrace it.
