Good posts by FMA in this thread, the only balanced view so far by the sounds of it.

Interestingly, Chrissivad felt the need to drag English fans into the argument.

The first two posters who took this thread off topic, one has their location as London and one a seat at WHL, so i quessed they were English. So i took there question closer to their home.

And i dont see what racism and religion have to do with this thread anyway :|

Maybe you're right, or maybe they're far less visible nowadays? You've got your finger more on the pulse, so I'll take your word for it. Is the same true for Hibs and Hearts, though?

You are probably correct in that they are less visible but, that mean they will be now where near where the games are being played which can only be a good thing as it means real supporter can watch the game in an environment where they don't feel like they are going to be attack just for supporting one type of team. As I have already said these people aren't fans of the clubs they affiliate with because they only use it as an excuse to fight and it happens all over world and not exclusively in Scotland and England.

My knowledge of Aberdeen FC comes from living there between 1990 and 1996 and from my grandfather who followed Aberdeen for 50 years home and away until he got too old to care.

I haven't heard anything from the hearts fans for a long time now. Hibs casuals name was still said alot 5-10years ago and did still have a group of people active, but its all gone quiet again there as well.

the scots have got big problems with hooligans, they always have but up until recently this seems to have escaped the media's eyes, and probably because the scottish national team havn't qualified for a major tournamet for years and years.

Remember the years when scot fans were feared by all, no?! well take a look at this documentry that talks about the old firm match today.

The old firm is madness personified to be honest with you!

That's the big football where there IS expected to be trouble.....BUT we're not talking about them are we?

 So why is it in France 98 we got awarded as the best fans. Or Celtic fans at the Uefa Cup final were also awarded as the best behaved fans in the competition.

If you know the history of the Old Firm you would know why there is such a heated rivalry between the 2 teams. It has more to do with the religious devide between Catholics and Protestants which has lead to a lot of sectarian violence.

Look, find the middle ground here - anyone who's been to/lived/lives in Scotland will know exactly what they're like and if you haven't actually been in any of them positions, you're not really in a position to comment and expect to not be accused of stereotyping.

Scots do everything we do, but with 100 times more passion and devotion. When they support their team, they really support their team - some feel the need to prove themselves by physical contact, and a few have proven themselves to be pretty formidable in a fight, but if you drop the club colours and raise that blue and white cross, or a banner bearing the Royal Coat of Arms then theres a unity we've lacked in England for years and years.

When abroad, following their national side, 90% of Scotland fans get nothing but smiles, they mingle with the other fans, they get absorbed in the moment without getting into arguments for the sake of it (a stark contrast to the heavy proportion of England fans who see the time from arrival to kick off as their opportunity to consume their own body weight in local grog and collapse in a puddle of their own sick)

The only reason we see so much about the few spots of morons who have to fight it out is because the tabloids make it so visibile. It wouldn't matter if it was completely unrelated in some cases, but football violence is NOT the issue it was 15, even 10 years ago.

one thing from the record report

It also emerged that a female Dons fan was raped by a group of men in the city 24 hours before the trouble erupted.

It may have been that the Aberdeen fans heard about this and decided to kick off with the locals.
