For anyone to disagree with what I am saying I can only assume has very little experience of playing football.

We are reporting what we are seeing and what top football experts tell us about different formations.

As I suggested before, if you read some recent match threads (and West Ham is a great start as in that match the lack of width was a real issue) then you might better understand. You will also find that your views on wingers which seem to be confined to 442/orthodox wingers may not be shared by most on SC who have now moved on from 442 to understand the 4231/433/4411 type formations that Spurs now tend to play - its been a learning experience for us all.

I would suggest that you are all Football Manager fanatics at best and have never played football in your life.

If you wish to discuss the topic of Adam Smith and fitting into AVB's system then please do so, calling people who disagree with you 'Football Manager fanatics' and 'has very little experience of playing football' is not on

against west ham our right side was ok, but having Verts who isnt a wing back and Sigy who does cuts in caused us problems. Against Hull, Lennon did cut in as well and we still had very little width down that side, but again Walker and Townsend created the width down the right

But Townsend got down that right more than Walker did that game

We do push our fullbacks up, and the little i have seen from Smith he puts in a good cross, or better than what we have been doing anyway.

I just dont think they have been going as far up as they have been. Not sure if its because we are so high that there is little space for them to get as far forward and behind the fullback

Thanks for this.

MainMan is arguing that under AVB the wingers provide all the width and full backs defend.

I was trying to disabue him of that general notion - in the West Ham .game because of lack of attacking FB's (Rose injured, WAlker sick but played) Townsend took to providing width at times (which I suspect helped earn him MOTM).

Think I will suggest Main Man changes thread to BC's tactical autopsey thread to argue his point

Agreed that Smith can cross well. Would love him to get a chance in the first team (maybe cups) to show what he can do - after performances from Rose, Townsend and now Kane, it seems youth is showing what it canm do quite well !

Yes we do play with three attacking midfielders, two of which are out wide (providing width funnily enough and keeping out of the number 10s space).

As I previously commented - the players have a responsibility for an area of the pitch but they are not confined to it like traditional wingers. They have freedom to drift inside and create and shoot.

It's the full backs who are expected to keep width and patrol up and down the wing.

You seemed to be confusing the role of traditional winger in a 442 - who's responsibility it is to keep the width. It's different in a 4231 or 433 as has been explained to you.

Do you not understand the mechanics of a 4-2-3-1?

I understand it fantastically well.

I don't understand why I am being vilified for pointing out that we do not operate with five centrally operating midfielders but there you go.

Back on topic, in this or any other system, Adam Smith will add nothing to our team.

Wisdom probably play tomorrow with QPR visiting, I see Derby playing him against weaker teams

Why the fuck would they ask for Smith on loan and then ask for Wisdom. What a fucking waste of a loan.

Get Smith back and get him playing in our cup and Euro games.

He got sent there for playing CB, as he replaced a injured CB but instead they have moved him to RB and played the third choice

Do not think we can recall him until the window; certainly not without a month's notice.

Hope we do it then. Let's get him back here as back up for Walker and if necessary loan or sell Naughton. Naughton's perfectly acceptable, nowhere near as bad as some make out, but he's not the future, and Smith just might be, so is better here getting interim cup and injury stand-in games etc so we can assess him better.

This seems to make it even less likely that Smith will get a game; he seems to be the wrong full back for the shape MacLaren wants to play. I am sure we will see him back at Spurs soon.

Smith returns to Spurs Derby County, Last updated: 1 hour 47 minutes ago On-loan Tottenham defender Adam Smith has returned to the Barclays Premier League club after his spell with Derby was ended by mutual agreement. Smith was brought to Pride Park in the summer by former manager Nigel Clough on a season-long deal. The 22-year-old right-back made six starts under Clough but has not featured regularly since the arrivals of new head coach Steve McClaren. Smith made three starts under McClaren before losing his place to Andre Wisdom, who came in on loan from Liverpool.

Next challenge is to understand what Spurs will do with Adam Smith now he's back :

1. Do we play him ? He is now counted as over 21 so :
- He is eligible to play in the domestic cups - the only game in December is the Capital One Cup v West Ham
- I think we only nominated 23 or 24 players in the PL squad (Lamela and Erickson being under 21), so he could be added to the squad ( Ithink), but would AVB play him ?
- He is not eligible to play in EL as we nominated a 25 man squad, but after January we might be able to reshuffle (eg removing Dawkins now on loan) to add Smith.

or

2) Loan him out again - but where ?
He's already 'done' the championship in many ways having started over 30 Championship games for Millwall and Derby (and over 100 professional league games - but is it enough to get a PL loan which is what he really needs ? Which PL sides need to upgrade their RB's ?

English players do not tend to do well overseas (lack of language skills being one reason), so a loan to a French or Spanish or German side may not be an option.

Love to see him play for Spurs - but not sure AVB would play him, given his general reticence to play younger players from the development squad (and Smth - surprisingly to me - did not feature for the first team in pre-season)
