Adebayor Will Fire Us To Champions League

I'm fed up of everyone clinging onto Adebayor's media image of being a hate-figure of someone who can't be relied upon of someone who is apathetic and a footballer who just plays to fill his pockets full of dirty money.

He doesn't give enough interviews, I always remember watching an interview of him during the african cup of nations a number of years ago while he was an Arsenal player and actually really liking him despite sinking so many goals against us.... The interview below reminded me of this and he really does show that all this BS surrounding his African Cup of Nations late arrival, he really was just being honourable to a team that doesn't pay him a penny:

The 28-year-old has yet to find top form this season but after showing flickers of his best in the second half of last night’s 1-1 draw in Lyon, which set up a Europa League last-16 tie with Inter Milan, Adebayor is determined to put one over on his old club.
“It’s getting better for us every season and we have to find a way to finish in the top four, especially me,” said Adebayor. “It’s a big opportunity to show people I was right to leave Arsenal, which means finishing above them.
“We have a great chance this season to finish above them and we have to take it. Everyone knows there is a big rivalry between the two clubs.
“You know what happened last year, when it went to the final day but they finished above us. We can’t make the same mistake again.
“I’m getting back to my best and last night I was quite happy with the way I played. The most important thing is to get my form back. Physically I’m looking better and when I’m good physically, I know the rest will follow.”
Adebayor has scored only three times for his club during a season he regards as one of the toughest of his career.
Complicated negotiations for his permanent transfer to Spurs denied him a pre-season with his new club. Thereafter there were injuries, a loss of form, the red card against Arsenal and the uncertainty of whether he would play for Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Adebayor took part after a late change of heart but then left Spurs exasperated when he returned to London less than 24 hours before their home game with Newcastle on February 9 — even though Togo were knocked out of the tournament in South Africa on February 3.
At the Stade Gerland last night, Adebayor insisted his late return was due to poor organisation from the Togo football authorities, whom, he claimed, took too long to provide a plane on which the team could leave South Africa. Adebayor also spoke of his sense of duty to the compatriots he captained.
“I could have got a private jet to come back to London but I didn’t want to abandon my team,” Adebayor revealed. “As a captain, it’s not a good example. I couldn’t abandon the ship.
“It took four days for them to send a plane to get us out of South Africa and back to Togo. It’s not like it was for other teams, whose federations sent planes to get them back to their clubs straight away.
“The president of Togo then wanted to see us and congratulate us for getting to the quarter-finals, so I couldn’t just jump on a plane straight back to London. I’m the captain, so I had to be there.
“You want to be able to concentrate on football but that’s never the case with Togo. People can have their own opinions but players got a lot of time off after the European Championship.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is a tough tournament, with different weather, food and culture. When you come back to England, you’re going from playing in very hot temperatures to playing in minus-three, minus-four degrees.
“I came back and people started blaming me, so it’s not easy.”
Spurs’ progress in the Europa League has delighted head coach Andre Villas-Boas but Adebayor fears it will make the job of finishing in the top four more difficult. He added: “It will make it complicated but when you get to this stage you want to win the competition.”

I really think he hasn't been given enough of a chance this season and has never been at full fitness. I think an Adebayor at full fitness, even if still inconsistent and at times apathetic will win us a lot of matches this season like he has done for City, Madrid and Arsenal in the past. People really do have short memories, even this season he was having a great game against Arsenal but then got sent off and it's been downhill since.

Yes people may be sceptic etc etc. But this guy's allegiances live with his family and his country he is not a souless footballer chasing glory. I really think the wages are there to secure the future of his children and grandchildren and the liveilihoods of those living in his country.

I believe in you Ade, stop the hate, don't take the bait, get behind him before it's too late ;)

Good post, it will be nice to see him get a run of games. He should be playing to keep his place in the team before JD gets back, if he can get some form back and we keep Bale fit then I think we'll get the 3rd or 4th spot.

I think we'll see a cracking performance from him in the NLD...he'll be so up for it and he will have learnt, I expect a controlled but very hungry performance from him and by Christ will we need it. Could be the difference to getting the right result on the day.

In fact if he plays well and we get a result against them I would go as far as saying we'll see the best of him for the remainder of the season which could be extremely significant in terms of where we'll finish.

The NLD is massive in so many ways and Adebayor has a real chance to define our season IMO. Lets get right behind him, because...lets be honest with him not anywhere near his best its going to be a slog.

Nice to see some support for Ade on here.

A lot of the time he looks lazy. He looked lazy plenty of times last season, and he was still fantastic. He certainly doesn't look as lazy as Berbatov used to, and again that wasn't a problem because of what he offered.

There are some things about him that annoy me, such as the delay in joining in the summer (which admittedly I don't know the details of), and his poor finishing this season. But if he's happy and playing well he's about as good a striker as we could hope to get.

Anyone convincing themselves that he's useless should re-watch the Newcastle 5-0 game from last season. Ade put in a phenomenal, unselfish performance that saw him creating and scoring. He's not played well this season ( a season where through a mixture of injury, Defoe's form, and the ACN has been in fits and starts), however I share the OPs confidence that he'll hit form soon.

He is clearly on his way back to his best. Honestly, how many strikers would have tried that pass to Bale yesterday? Just because both Bale and Dempsey failed to convert simple chances doesn't mean Ade's hold up and passing play wasn't great.

Well done for posting that. I think there's a danger of people being swept up on the bandwagon that he's lazy, only in it for the money, doesn't love the club etc etc. That sort of talk escalates and just drives a wedge between the player and the fans and inevitably leads to one conclusion. Hopefully enough people can give him the benefit of the doubt, give him the chance to show his true worth and repay the club for signing him and the fans for paying to watch.

I've been saying for a while that I don't think it's just injury and suspension that has effected his form (though those are 2 good reasons) but he has only ever played with Dempsey or JD. Really excited to see what he can do with holtby but I imagine they will need a few games to click, hopefully they gel quickly. We should see a big performance from in against City. 2nd place anyone? ;-)

I don't think it helps that one of the main suppliers of the killer ball across the box drifts inside most of the game. I love Benny but some of his crossing is abysmal and he's not fast enough to beat his man and whip that killer ball in. Now we have Holtby I'd like to see Bale ripping some right backs a new one for a few games and getting balls in for Ade to feed off. If the laziest player I've ever seen (Pav) can get on the end of one, I guarantee that Ade will thrive. Just look at the vid in the other thread against Milan where he ripped Maicon a 2nd, 3rd & 4th arse hole. He was doing that regularly last year and we miss it because he has to try and do the jobs that mancrush & rat face did.

I don't really know what is so positive about hoping Defoe is injured. Stop the hate indeed.

Have to say I would rather both Ade and Defoe fully fit and fighting for the starting place. But I get your point and you are totally right about getting off his back.

He is a quality player and needs a little run to get going, two big derbies may just do it. Lets hope so

He will certainly be up for the NLD. I just hope he can control the huge adrenalin surge and not get himself sent off again. If he can do that he will make a massive difference to us and the result. Hopefully then we will be set nicely for the run in to the end of the season.

Come on Ade. you know you can do it.

Spurs fans have a habit of turning on their players. Personally I am sick of all the moaning I hear in the stands. I have heard numerous people criticize Adebayor and an Idiot a few rows behind me still sings the old Adebayor song.

At the Lyon game I even heard a couple of Idiots criticizing Dawson even when he wasn't playing and lamenting how wonderful Vertonghen was when Dawson is unbeaten as a starting center back in the premier league this season.

If he finds form we get top 4. It's that simple. We can do it if he doesn't but it will be much harder.

I edited it in (now edited out). Defoe will be more hungry if he has a bit more time on the sidelines, which is in when he's at his best IMO. I just think Adebayor really needs to play against Arsenal as he will be really fired up for that game but if Defoe is fit I know AVB will pick him.

In an ideal world we'd be playing Arsenal on Monday for Ade and then West Ham after which Defoe would play in cos he always scores against the hammers!
