I personally don't feel Vertonghen deserves an improvement in his contract...

You're entiled to your onions, as if everybody.

But i'm glad contract offers/extentions are handled by the experts and not numptys who sit on their thumbs whilst trolling Football manager threads!

I'm also glad contract offers/extensions are handled by experts and not cultist supporters who seem to believe a player who is a shadow of the defender we thought we signed should be rewarded for 18 months of mediocrity.

18 months of mediocrity?

Wasn't it less then 18 months, JV was named in the PFA team of the year? What about representing national team at a WC finals? Or is Belgium a 'cultist' nation?

Jan is obviously a good defender, never been world class by a long shot but seeing as we're lacking in great defenders we once had then you'd probably put him amongst the upper echelons of top defenders in the world therefore he sees himself as a player who deserves to play in the CL, who can blame him.

If he commands a big fee next season then so be it.

He had a very decent first season with us, but trailed off and then was mediocre last year. He's managed to become a player that is easy to get after and wear a distinct look of not being bothered. There's a huge amount of hype attached to him. It was thought that he could be a big team leader, but now I don't think anyone would consider him a suitable captain.

And by your reasoning, everyone at the world cup deserves a new contract, which is absurd. Did you actually watch him play? He didn't distinguish himself for Belgium - he gave away a penalty in the first game and was dropped for their second. He did get back in because of injuries to another players and scored in one game.

If his contract extension includes a pay rise, then it's a cult argument of "class" and "leadership", or that fact that he's left-footed, that seems to be winning the day. Not a cold evaluation of how he has performed thus far into his existing contract.

Where did anyone say a new contract should be handed out for playing at a World Cup?

I merely made the point that a player you described as having "18 months of mediocrity" represented his country at a major sporting final.

So again, to summarise I would argue that's not a bad accomplishment for a 'mediocre' player.

But hey, our opinions are what makes us all different and unique. Yours is as valued as the next...

Your argument seems to be that because he was at the world cup, he must be good. There were 32 countries x 25 players at the world cup. And I have news for you, they aren't all good players.

Your opinion, as it is, appears to be that he hasn't been mediocre and his appearance at the world cup somehow supports your point. I'm pointing out that his appearances for us and for Belgium at the World Cup, where he was dropped from the side, aren't all that. So he probably shouldn't be getting better terms than he is currently on after under-performing for us for too long.

Good, he is our best CB and should be our new captain. Unfortuately for Jan there are a lot of fans who think his body langauge is wrong and that makes him not care, said it before and i say it again i wonder what Uni you have to go to to get a degree is reading a players demeaner.

I can look back in to our recent history and list a number of players we shouldn't have signed in the first instance.

But the list of players I can think of who we shouldn't have extended contracts with is much much smaller. Generally the club have a much better idea what they are paying for in these cases and it usually only leads to higher prices being received when we, all too often, sell.

The club know what they are trying to do and if it doesn't work out they'll cash in.

He doesn't have mega short contract to support the arguement of extending.

Therefore giving better terms to underperforming players sends out a shit message to the rest of the squad.

Have a bad spell form, start the season in your comfort zone, and you still might get paid more... brilliant.....
