Tottenham Hotspur are currently locked in talks with Ajax regarding the sale of midfielder Edgar Davids.

The tenacious tackler has been strongly linked with a January move after failing to hold down a regular spot under Martin Jol and the player's lawyer Robert Geerlings has now confirmed that an 18-month deal has already been agreed between Davids and the Dutch giants.

Davids now looks set to return to the Amsterdam ArenA for the first time since 1996, if the two clubs can come to an agreement over a transfer fee for the experienced performer.

Ajax boss Henk ten Cate denied any interest in Davids in December, but is now prepared to spend some of the €2.5million (£1.65million) generated by Marcus Rosenberg's sale to Werder Bremen to land the Spurs man.

The former Dutch international won the 1995 UEFA Champions League title with Ajax before joining Milan a year later, and his career now looks like coming full circle.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur's Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids has agreed an 18-month contract with Ajax Amsterdam, according to his lawyer Robert Geerlings.

However, Geerlings also told the weekly Voetbal International magazine the clubs still had to work out the details of the transfer before the window closes on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Davids began his career at Ajax in 1991 and helped them win three league titles from 1994-96 plus the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the Champions League in 1995.

A year later he joined AC Milan before switching to Juventus, where he won three titles in 1998, 2002 and 2003, Barcelona and Inter Milan before moving to Spurs in 2005.

He has represented the Netherlands at four major finals and has played in four Champions League finals.

He certainly gave us a great push at the start of last season, but his level of influence has wained due to poor performances after his first injury. he's an expensive bit part player so maybe this is best for all concerned

Given that his contract is up at the end of the season, I'm surprised that there is much value in the next 5-6 months.

I suppose his reputation precedes him. And it locks out any other bidders when he becomes a free agent. So it's worth a punt for Ajax.

P.S. Interesting to read this in conjunction with the rumour on the other thread about a training ground confrontation.

If we get any money for him I'll be very pleased. As much as I wanted him to do well he really hasn't done anything other than foul Ray Parlour and scored against Wigan. I'm just glad Jol dropped him eventually

This is so narrow-minded. I suppose you only notice people who score goals and foul opponents dramatically? Davids provided most of the drive and determination we had last season, and without him Carrick would not have been able to have such a stabilising effect in our defensive midfield area. Aren't these the two main factors missing from spurs team this season, drive/determination and stability just in front of the defence (ie Davids and Carrick)?

He was brilliant for us for the majority of last season, his experience added to the team invaluable - please do not forget that.

If he goes, it would be nice to Ryan Babel or Nigel De Jong come the other way (wishful thinking).

COYS - bounce back against Southend tonight.

Euhm Nigel de Jong is at HSV

Babel is in talks with Ajax to sign a new contract

So where will the fight come from now? (excuse the pun given the events the other day with ED and BMJ). Oh for a Graham Roberts type character or Dave Mackay figure to appear for us right now!!!! We need it.

I agree that he was past it with us but before the injury he brought us fight and a will to win that has slowly evaporated to the point that we are not secure with a 2.0 lead.

I also hope he left enough of his experience with the younger players to help them progress and say good luck to him. And who's going to be the old head we get in now after Naybet and Davids as it seems this is a deliberate and thought out ploy at the club?

So what are we left with in the middle now...

    Hudd
    Ghaly
    Murphy
    Jenas
    Tainio
    Zokora
    (Malbranque)

Out of these guys, I'd like to see Zokora and Jenas cement themselves as first choices. Huddlestone has been a great deputy to our injured and ill midfield, but assuming we won't have woken up to and addressed our midfield shortfallings by the end of January, these two are the best combination, on paper, available to us.

As for the void left by Davids, I think it's important that another campaigner comes in to fill the psychological space that, let's be honest, Davids vacated a while ago.

Who?? It's a tough one. Ayala would have been my choice.

I haven't really been too vocal in this window about who I would see in and out... So now's a good a time as any:

Left wing - McGeady (Celtic), suggest you check him out on youtube.com if you have doubts.
Left Back - Heinze, Bale is not a risk, but Heinze is for the here and now, and cheaper.
C Midfield - Someone in the Barton / Parker mould. Pay the Earth for him if you have to.

If Bent was available, I'd take him as well and straight swap Keane with McGeady; Robbie has been great, I just think it's time up for him now at Spurs. I would have loved to see Ayala come in, but Rocha seems to be a similar player.

Out - Murphy, Keane, YP Lee.

Gardner and Tainio are good squad players, so I'd keep them for now.

What is WRONG with you people?? Keane was playing very well before the injury. While I understand he has some weaknesses in the finishing department.... it is as if some people are assuming he was playing poorly when he was out with injury. And for that matter, he is one of few ppl with a never say die attitude left

I really don't understand what you folks are shooting or smoking.... Perhpas you shouldn't idle along the High Road, peering suspiciously and curiously down alleys on your walks to the match... rather, just check yourself into rehab.
