Ajax coach Henk ten Cate has ruled out bringing Edgar Davids back to the club.

    Source: Sky Sports

Davids had been linked with a return to the Amsterdam Arena after failing to hold down a place in the Tottenham side this season.

The midfielder's future at White Hart Lane looks uncertain with Davids currently well down the pecking order.

Davids had hinted recently that he would be keen on a return to Ajax, but ten Cate insists he has no plans to sign the tough-tackling midfielder.

"Edgar Davids will not come in the winter break to Amsterdam. Our squad is complete," ten cate told RTV.

"At the most, Leonardo will come and Jan Vertonghen will perhaps be loaned out."

Davids your here till your contracts up mate and good job to. He may not be playing much, but i reckon what he does behind the scenes is invaluable. The youngsters coming through have all said how he helps them out.
I'd like to see us offer him some form of coaching role when he finally decides to pack the game in. Could do a lot worse than having him on our coaching books.
  2. NeverRed06
agree with captain spur tht he should be given a coaching role next season and if we have some injuries then he could fill in

dont think he will get alot of games this season but there will be alot of injuries and its up to MJ to pick him out of him, danny murphy, teemu tainio and hossam ghaly

I agree with both of you and always thought that this might have been discussed when he first arrived. I only hope that he doesn't get disgruntled by his lack of playing time and thus put off staying on when his playing contract ends.

    We'll find out soon...

Personally I would be happy to see Davids leave. He would have to be a saint to keep a positive and constructive attitude for the rest of the season. A player of his standing shouldn't be reduced to being a back up to players who will never be as good as he was at his best (e.g Murphy).

If we're getting 500 people logging on for matchdays now, imagaine the carnage come january and "The window".

I don't agree that Davids should be "well down the pecking order" in the current Spurs squad. If we had him against Arsenal, it is very likely we would not have been so tame in midfield. I think he was quite effective in most games he played this season, eg West Ham at home, Blackburn away (his last match so far, when he was unexpectedly substituted after a good 1st half).

Tainio could play a similar role of a ballwinner and simple/effective passmaker before he was injured. At the moment though, I don't see anybody who can do this job sufficiently well for us, if Davids is sidelined.
Davidshas leader's qualities and apart from him noone else is displaying enough of leader's commitment and vocal support/instruction in the current Spurs team.

Just for the record, I've moved Mawspurs' thread of the same name - he actually posted it before Geez but people replied to Geez's thread which forced my hand.

It's no coincidence that upon the arrival of Davids 18 months ago, fans began seeing a snappier, tougher Spurs midfield for the first time in years. The result of which was ultimately a stronger defense, a combative midfield helping us to 5th place in the Premiership, which was due, in part, to Davids reported inspirational speeches and dressings-down of his colleagues in the changing room before and after matches.

The Davids factor was the reason for recruiting the Pitbull, though it has now warn off, correlating alongside Davids' waring interest in playing for Spurs.

Like Naybet did for the defense 3 years ago, Davids' experience aided the likes of Thudd, Jenas and Tainio discover a more aggressive nature... but, alas, He must go, with a similar role model bought in to replace his commanding absence.

Suggestions? Ayala could be worth a two-year contract.

I know what your saying it can't be easy for one of the best players in the world (in his prime) to be sat on the bench with Spurs or any club for that matter. Hopefully though he realises that age catches up with everyone as he's been around for ages i'm sure he's seen plenty of other ageing stars experience the same.
So in short i definately want him to say and as i said before hopefully get offered a coaching role when it's time to hang his boots up.
  10. Captain Spur
Got to agree with that, i do seem to remember him saying this was one of the best clubs he's been at and had never experienced a reception from fans like he did with us. So hopefully all that still carries some weight and he does go into coaching with us!

Thanks for the explanation GDG, it can be confusing sometimes when things like this occur.

It´s good to have someone of Davids magnitude at the club. But don´t forget he played like crap this season, before he got dropped (or injured). Maybe we should give him one last chance in the starting eleven, though.

If davids stays to see out his contract im happy that we have a player who we can rely on to come in and do a job but if he decides to leave then thats ok with me, he aint good enough for our 1st choice team and we could use the money from his wages to sign others. with regards to him taking a coaching role im not too sure about that, lots of GREAT players have been useless coaches, if martin jol thinks he brings something special to the table then fine but do we need more coaches? wont they all just get in each others way, if we do need a coach it should be the best man for the job not edgar because he was a great player.

Ohh I dunno... stick Clive Allen as a first team strikers' coach, put Davids in with the younger players...

As for the immediate future, Davids should stick about - we've played 31 games already this season, we've 6 matches in about 2 weeks over Xmas, and it's around Xmas that our seasons used to derail for a startling lack of depth ("and on comes Sinton for Ginola"?) - that's without UEFA cup in there too...

19 more league games, and the same again in cups (obviously assuming Spurs can manage a treble this season ). We're nowhere near the end of this season, and if we don't pick up a LW in January, then I'd eat my own foot if Davids didn't feature again. Just the sheer numbers means that he'll get a look-in.
  15. gloryglory
Davids was terrible at Blackburn and Jol was furious with him for refusing to stay anywhere near the left touchline. He has no respect for authority and he no longer justifies inclusion despite that (which he once did). He's like Keane in his last season at Man U.

I have no idea if he'd be a good coach but we'll see what Jol thinks. I doubt to be honest that they're even talking, and I expect him to leave in January without featuring in a squad again.
  16. longdistancespursfan
sure if he stays he will get a few games, i certainly got no prob with edgar.

Ohh I dunno... stick Clive Allen as a first team strikers' coach -
do you not think a natural finisher like clive already has an input with the strikers, taking him from the reserve team and giving him such a job would be a waste of his talents, i think we already have lots of coaches, comolli obviously deals with transfers so we got jol, allen, hughton to train and coach the players, and i think there mite be a guy called inglethorpe there too, too many cooks spoil the broth!! if davids is a better coach than one we got then he should replace them but i dont think we should have too many.
  17. NeverRed06
where is ayala at the mo by the way

someone mentioned him earlier, he would be like naybet but alot better quality wise and could give king a break

In which case I apologise profusely to Mawspurs

Vows to do better but probably wont

Amazing how subjective the views of the same game can be! Davids was surely FAR from "terrible" at Blackburn, and many of the people who saw the match actually thought it was one of his better performances. How would he have managed to create at least 2 chances for Mido with a pass from left to right if he "refused to stay anywhere near the left touchline"? And wasn't his powerful shot just a yard off the post the only other notable shot on goal in the first half apart from the dipper from Defoe?
The reason Jol sent Malbranque on was because we had to create more in an effort to equalize, and Davids was the least regular player in the midfield (Zokora, Jenas and Lennon seem to be our "untouchables").
And Malbranque was not exactly a big improvement on the left in that match, was he.

Anyone would have been unhappy after being left in those circumstances. If Jol wants timid "yesmen" he should not have dared to accept Davids in his team.
I hope this is not the repeat of the situation with Pedro Mendez when a Champions League winner is forced to sit on the bench for daring to voice his displeasure at being ignored for sake of players not in a better form and definitely not contributing more to team than him (Brown for Mendez, Zokora for Davids in quite a few matches this season were definitely no improvement).
