£150,000 for a couple of years is not excessive considering the current market, and that Toby, together with Vert, forms a formidable defensive partnership that could not be easily replicated.

I thought the rumors from the club were that it wasn't about the total wage amount (which is not wholly unreasonable), it was that Toby's agent (who I believe is his relative?) had already agreed a deal and then demanded more money at the last minute, which pissed off Poch.

Pay the man.
Concentrate on the essentials.
He plays fair on the pitch
agents shenanigans are irrelevant.

It’s been a minor miracle that we’ve been able to get as far as we have without offering the same wages as other top clubs. This system is unstustaniable. Sooner or later the club is going to have to start paying its players more, otherwise we’ll lose our key players and won’t attract new ones. We’ll just be buying youngsters that may or may not eventually come good. That method won’t win us trophies. We’ll always be the nearly team, which is a depressing thought.

That's entirely reasonable. It would cost us far more to properly replace him. You can't buy the understanding he has with Jan, and what our younger players can learn from him.

150k sounds value to me considering what him and verts bring to the team. I'm certain we would have beaten Juve last season if he was playing.

£150k a week! One hundred and fifty thousand pounds a fucking week!

If we tolerate this then .....

Once again, it's not a case of "just pay him what he wants".

Alderweireld and his advisors might not have outright used this club as a stepping stone, and he's probably satisfied with life at the club and the level of football he's been playing at so not rocking the boat, but it's clear they've always had his future trajectory mapped out and that he wants to go on to the biggest club possible and maximise his earnings - who he's playing for, and the money that he is paid.

They're content to wait and see what the best deal he can get is, and the clause they got inserted for a release fee suggests they've always had retaining some control of his long term future in mind.

By all accounts negotiations with his team were extremely hard and then when a deal looked possible they'd move the goalposts once more. I very much suspect if you dangled 150k a week (or more) in front of him right now, you'd get a reply about waiting till the summer to consider it etc. as he waits to see if there's a better deal elsewhere.

In the end these other offers might not materialise and he might (I think it's unlikely at this point) sign up eventually, and it's clear he's being professional and not letting it affect his performances or attitude on the pitch (though it has to be said also, that playing well will help him attract potential suitors.....), but this situation is down to the player - he's letting it drag on to be in total control of his destiny.

For sure and let's face it, he almost certainly wants some trophies to look back on before his career is over.

In this market that is his value and as a club we need to accept that and either pay or admit defeat. I know it's not as simple as that and he allegedly moved the goalposts, but if we want to compete then we need to start paying these wages. He's one of the very best CB's in the league ffs

Even if we did want to give him that, it's almost certainly too late. Why on earth would he sign it now, when in just a few months time he can wait to see if someone else comes in, possibly get offered a deal in the £300k range, and tell us to beat that offer or he's leaving? We've seen this play out at Arsenal - once a contract is nearly up or a release clause about to become available way below market value all the power is with the player and you either lose them or pay megabucks. Our only real hope of keeping him at this point is if none of the giants decide to actually go for him.

I wonder why he was not sold this summer or January?

I'd be amazed if Utd didn't.. .
