£150 k a week is never a fair wage. It might be the going rate, but that’s not the same as being fair
You have a very narrow definition of "fair". It usually means "reasonable in the circumstances", which I believe applies here. It doesn't mean "reasonable compared to average wages".

It may be a sign of the times. But if Aaron "fecking " Ramsey is getting a contract reportedly worth hundreds of millions a week, what could Toby secure?

I love football now as much as I ever have, but the wages are truly obscene.

I think he's a great defender probably our best since King but we need to face facts. The guy wants to go because if he wanted to stay he'd have agreed to 150k a week. He won't get a lot more than that elsewhere, although he might get a signing fee, so I think it's time we cash in on 25m. Wish he wanted to stay but he doesn't, we can't force the guy. He's probably wanted out since last summer so credit to him for doing a great job for us.

From what I've read there's been a £150k contract on the table, ready for him to sign for at least a year. Maybe that's true, maybe it isn't. If it's true he's cost himself in excess of 7.5m already, so I don't see any way he signs the same contract now or any time soon. IMO, he'll go somewhere for 25m in the summer where they apparently don't have any issues with some players earning way more than others which is a problem we seem to be totally incapable of dealing with.

He's on 50k? :wideyed:

Was between 25k-50k. Different reports/people have said different number but it was in that ballpark. Poch went to bat for him with Levy and they all agreed > £100k. Then his dad wanted more.

Our ITK suggested we agreed a new contract but his advisors kept changing the goalposts.

I had a quick read of the article and they are using The Times as their source. Do I believe The Times has insider info? Not sure, possible.

It is my belief that Alderweireld saw the next contract as his last big one. He was regularly being talked about as the best centre back in the Prem so if he could go to an elite club now is the time.

But for whatever reason it appears no elite club came in for him.

His performances have been very good this season. If getting him to sign is simply about paying then I hope we do.

Lots of ifs and buts, however, If Toby runs his contract down with us and then signs a new deal are we likely to give him a signing on bonus?

Even if we did want to give him that, it's almost certainly too late. Why on earth would he sign it now, when in just a few months time he can wait to see if someone else comes in, possibly get offered a deal in the £300k range, and tell us to beat that offer or he's leaving? We've seen this play out at Arsenal - once a contract is nearly up or a release clause about to become available way below market value all the power is with the player and you either lose them or pay megabucks. Our only real hope of keeping him at this point is if none of the giants decide to actually go for him.

No one is going to pay him 300k a week. I read that last summer even Man u wasn't interested in his wage demands. We offered him 150 what 2 seasons ago, he played up.

300k a week is not the going rate for a top CB. Striker yes.. CB No. There is no parity in positions.. Forwards are always paid more. 300k a week for Toby even man city would tell him to f off.

According to this, the top 5 paid Premiership CB's are...

Luiz - £120k p/w
Otamendi - £120k p/w
Kompany - £120k p/w
Kolasinac - £150k p/w
Van Dijk - £180k p/w

So you're blatantly spot on (if those figures are true) and £300k p/w is a ridiculous request/thought.

Perhaps. But players who are out of contract tend to get ridiculous wages - Ramsey is the latest example. And Toby is in a kind of half-way position this summer where he can't leave for free, but can leave for a fee probably less than half his normal market value. He should be able to negotiate for that to translate to an oversized wage packet.

IMHO Toby is as good, if not better than Van Dijk, so maybe we 'should' pay him something close to that. In any case, there are so many add ons and bonuses, I'm sure we could get it to that with a lower basic salary.

Of course we should pay him near that. I was simply replying to, and agreeing with @Bobby_Lucky, re the initial (supposed) £150k offer a couple of years ago 'would' have put Alderweireld right up there with the highest earning players, in his position, in the entire country. (y)

I’m not disagreeing with you @coopsieyid quite the opposite. I think we should pay him at least the same as Van Dijk. I wish we had increased his salary before now as it might not have been such a big thing now.
