Jesus, seriously! Just give it to him. Where in the world are we going to get a better defender than that for that price.

He has arguably been our best player this year. He is a leader.

We don’t have the quality within our own squad to replace him and we certainly won’t be paying a transfer fee and wages for someone of a similar quality.

As a one off deal, it’s a financial no brainer. Managing wage expectations for other player is obviously the problem here. It’s a tough call.

But if we lose him, we will be weakened for a season or two, minimum.

i think that there was an issue where he reneged on a deal last year (@Hercules ITK IIRC).
Question is whether the on the field bygones be bygones is also an off the field reality.
If so, I think many fans would be fine if the winter saw some outgoings and new contracts for Toby, Eriksen and of course Verts and Dier.
One has to imagine that getting Janssen, GKN out would free up some money. We also know that Fernando, Dembele and Vorm are leaving this summer on frees (which creates wage space). Might also be time, if things are really tight, to get one of our 3 RBs out to raise some funds....my pref is Aurier is sold.
Surely that gives us enough room to lock down these key players.

Levy and Poch should hopefully have a desired baseline for the 20 or so players they want at the club at the start of next season. Lock those down and build from there:
Hugo, Gazza, KWP, Trippier, Toby, Juan, Verts, Davidson, Rose, Davies, Winks, Dier, Wanyama, Sissoko(!), Eriksen, Lamela, Son, Alli, Kane is 19 core players....they need to be kept at the club long term and then supplement with youth talent and perhaps one big summer pick up.
Should be doable and not break the bank

He’s had 2 good games, let’s not start expecting him to all of a sudden be on par with Toby.

Far from it. However, every time he's played for us he has shown what a good technical footballer he is and that he passes accurately and reads the game well. He's also shown that he can bounce back from disappointment and not change the way he likes to play. I personally think we have the makings of a top player on our hands who needs to be brought on carefully, but not over protected. If he oesn't get the opportunity here, he'll be off which would be criminal, but I'm sure Poch knows exactly what we've got. On the flip side, we have been told that Toby pissed Poch off BIG time although he seems to be back in the fold for now. Like I said earlier, I'd see a contract for him as a good thing, not least because it protects his transfer value. He should be among the top earners at the club all day long.

I disagree with Aurier being sold. Maybe KWP? Maybe he didn’t make the cut.

We actually are well sorted at centre back and it's going to cost a lot to replace Toby. I would say 150K is good for a player of his quality. I hope we agree for him soon. Toby and Vertonghen are still a top class partnership and will be for a few more years. Having Sanchez and Foyth (who will save us a fortune on not signing De Ligt) will help rotate with them both and in time replace them.

People spectacularly missing the point re. these negotiations. He's been saying 150k (or whatever) from us for ages, and waiting to see what other clubs will offer him. It's been pretty obvious since early on that he/his agent see the club as a bit of a stepping stone and want the very best deal he can get.

I'm not surprised the club haven't caved in, given it seems he's been pretty obviously non-committal and seeing what else is out there. I also don't think, compared to a couple of years ago, he's got as much leverage as he did. It would be nice to get him signed up, but I don't think it would be as bad a blow as two years ago.

Even that's a £27m+ contract over 4 years, for a player who is 30 in March...I'm just not feeling it tbh.

I say pay it. He's in good nick and has only suffered a couple of longish absences since joining. If he wants 4 years, that's cool- we could sell after 3 and still re-coup a bit of dough. By which time Sanchez and Foyth will be monsters.

Poch obviously likes playing a three sometimes and even with Flexible Eric we can ill afford to lose the Bryclream Belgian.

Besides the fans deserve it, after the last window.

He won't be a direct replacement, Sanchez is the replacement for him with Foyth 3rd choice.

I think Foyth has the potential to be a top class defender, played well on his debut despite the 2 pens which for one of them I don't entirely blame him for and had a MOTM performance against Palace.

He seems to be highly rated by Poch and has been called up by Argentina as well, I think we have a player on our hands that could go some way to replace Toby.

Don't forget Vertonghen is out with a bad one and out of contract next summer without even a 1 year extension clause. At which point we could end up with Sanchez and Foyth and not a lot else.
Neither of them are ready to play without an experienced CB next to them week in week out. They're both big fit strong lads but neither have shown they are intelligent enough or able to take charge. Sanchez has repeatedly lost concentration and Foyth, whether he was played into trouble or not, didn't need to concede either of those pens, they were inexperienced tackles. Suddenly putting your faith in him and him making those mistakes is not how you build him up. He's in need of education.

I guess that's fair comment if you want to concentrate on the 2 pen performance rather than the MOM performance straight afterwards.

Sorry, he would never gave been given MOTM had he not nodded in the goal. He was shakey as fuck for the first 1/3 of the match. Had we conceded from any of the numerous late chances Palace had, he'd have been blamed and crucified.
I like him, but he's a child that needs time and cannot be counted on (yet)
