Apologies for the necro-thread bump, but I was killing time looking at YouTube videos and I came across this:

Think I agree with @sunnydelight786 that he's my favourite ever player. Objectively the likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are probably better players, but there was just something about the style of Del Piero's game that made him more of a joy to watch than any other player I've seen. Deserves to be remembered in the same bracket as any other truly great former player you care to name.

When I was a little kid Roberto Baggio was my idol, but I was very young. I grew up loving football whilst adoring Del Piero. A true legend and one of the greatest of all time in Italian football.

Great player, no doubt, but he was no il divin codino

I used to think that, but I honestly think they were on a par. They're often compared because of one taking up the mantle of the other at Juve and the fact that they were both prolific number 10s, but they had their differences. Baggio had a better goal return (percentage wise) for both Juve and Italy, but Del Piero contributed more as a talisman, similar to Totti at Roma. Baggio was the better dribbler (although Del Piero was also excellent) and more direct, but I think Del Piero was smarter in the way he played. He brought others into play more and played between the lines. Del Piero won both the World Cup and the Champions League, which Baggio had not, however Baggio won a Ballon d'Or. Both were absolute legends.

Roberto Baggio is the most underrated player of his era. In my eyes the best attacking Italian player of all time.

A a kid, I had a VHS copy of a Champions League game between Rangers and Juventus where a 20 year old Del Piero scored an outrageous free kick. Watched the game over and over (as kids do) until the cassette broke. Good times.

He seemed to get tarnished with that penalty miss for such a long time.

I loved Italia 90 and watching Baggio and Schillachi together was amazing.
