Sell a player who was the 3rd highest scorer last season?

We need payers like him in the team because if he's not playing he will up his game and if he does play he will increase the competition, if he signs a new contract it's a win/win.

He's only really useful if he's actually started in this midweek games we have coming up. His sub appearances are very benign at best (granted he's only returning from injury), so unless we see change or utility soon then I can see the logic in making way for youth or a different signing who can offer something different.

That's true, but they also have much more athleticism and movement. We have found well-creative players for our realistic pull, but we haven't adequately surrounded them with players who know how to open the channels for them.

In the actual real spirit of the thread - I think Dier has been pretty poor the last few games.

Here's my unpopular opinion - we should seriously think about signing a midfielder in January.

We have played 20-some odd games and we still don't have a good answer for what to do when Dembele leaves the pitch. He is a powerful, calming presence that allows us to retain possession under pressure and establish attacks, and no one else has really been able to replicate his success at that yet. I would wager that almost all of our worst passages of play this season have come without him on the pitch, and almost all of our best have come with him there. Yes we have a lot of midfielders and pretty good ones too, Bentaleb Mason Carroll Alli Onomah Winks, but none of them have provided anything like what Dembele has - and additionally none of them are particularly able to do Dier's job if he had to be replaced for any extended length of time. Unless Poch thinks one of the above will be stepping up and learning to fill that role fast, we should look for a tough, experienced MF who can fill in either the ball-shuttler Dembele role or the defensive shield Dier role as needed.
