Sir Les Ferdinand, apparently.

The team behind the Totally Money website have taken the average transfer values of players since the Premier League began in 1992 and compared the increase in transfer costs over time to calculate 'football player inflation'.

And it transpires that the £6.3m we spent on Les in 1997 would now be the equivalent of £64.3m and, when compared to all other purchases we've made over the years, our highest ever transfer fee.

The link to the website follows and you can filter by club to see all our sales and purchases, and sort by 'today's money' to find the most expensive purchases. As lists go, though, it's not for the faint-hearted. To buy the talent of Darren Bent today would set you back nigh on £60m, while it transpires that our most expensive defender ever was Pascal Chimbonda and that we spent more on Ben Thatcher than Lucas Moura.

I find it strange that we've not exceeded the Ferdinand fee over the past twenty years, but then Sir Les always did know how to stay up above other players for an inordinately long time, so, in that way, it's rather fitting.

Was a terrible signing too, we didn't get anywhere close to player he was at his best years in QPR and Newcastle.
Losing Sheringham for 3.5 and sign Ferdinand for 6 ...

He had such little impact, that we desperately brought back Klinsmann in January to save us from relegation

Big Les had a torrid time with a stomach injury with us. It's notable how many of our players had these problems in the 90s... Our physio room was so shit back then.

It's computed from an average of spending per season, as far as I can tell. That's why Chimbonda at about 7 m. £ in 2006 seems much more expensive than Dean Richards at 8 m. £ in 2001. Most would probably agree that 8 mil. in 2001 was a hefty fee, whereas I don't remember thinking Chimbonda was overly expensive at 7 m. in 2006, where that kind of fee were the norm for average players.

There's some weird errors in there too, we never signed Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev, and neither did we sign Sebastian Pocognoli, Sebastian Blanco or Christian Gamboa o_O

Weird, they were all West Brom players.

Chimbonda £32m :ROFLMAO:

I get the logic they've applied, but can't help but feel they've overdone it.

Also there is somehow deflation since we bought Aurier?!
