I've watched a lot of Gignac over the course of his career. When we were linked with him a few years ago I was vehemently opposed to the idea, and to be honest, I'm still not his biggest fan. But I think if we are looking for someone to be back up to Kane, to do the things Poch wants Kane to do when he's not there so the system stays the same, then I think - for free, and that's important as I wouldn't want to paying a fee for him - then he makes some sense. He's never going to give you Suarez energy (he never has even as a young player) but Bielsa has had him working reasonably well, he's aggressive, robust and has a brain. He holds the ball up pretty well (better than Kane) and makes decent choices usually.

I think in that Naybet/King type way he could teach Kane a thing or two. And what we have to remember here is we are looking for a quality back up, not a first choice, that will work the system the same, offer similar qualities so changing striker doesn't change the whole dynamics. A year with Bielsa isn't bad prep for a season under Poch.

I think he's a decent option in the scenario you describe, but then so is Ricky Lambert. I tend towards somebody who will push Kane for his place (like Slimani) since I think HK will have a tough time next season.

Gignac is one of the more inconsistent players I've watched. His early career arc was similar to Gourcuff's - he was amazing in 2009 for Toulouse and linked with top clubs. then, he got the move to Marseille and started poorly, then picked up an injury and didn't feature in 2011.

The past two seasons he's been good though, basically a 1 in 2 strike rate and he's gotten some call ups to the France team. You'll find people who think he's better than Giroud and even as lethal as Benzema when in form, and you'll also find those who think he's a shit Ricky Lambert. Seriously, some people have vehement hatred for this player, and if we sign him I'm sure this debate will take hold of our forum.

My personal opinion is that he's definitely a unit, a force to be reckoned with which if nothing else puts him above Soldado. He also has a pretty good workrate (when motivated) and an eye for the spectacular. Strong shot, likes to be physical, and will win a lot of balls in the air and hold up play well, but also works hard to get into the box. This puts him at least above Adebayor.

I maintain that if we had a player of Kane's quality starting instead of Soldado vs. Fiorentina we would have moved on to the next round, and possibly even won the thing. Kane's form started to slip the latter third of the season due to his overworking, and the kid won't be getting a break this summer either. We desperately need a change of pace striker and I think Gignac would be a great player, if Poch can manage his ego and he would accept the pay.

Harry K isn't exactly Usain Bolt but I don't hear too many complaints.

He's not but Gignac is a sloth. Plus we need an alternative striker who has a yard of pace, not another slower one.

The big money should not be spent on a striker as long as we have Kane. Gignac would be a good bakcup option, and would leave us with more money to spend on a CM.

We dont go out and buy a backup striker. We need to buy someone that gonna push Kane and keep him on his toes. If not we might as well just stick with Soldado? I much rather we get a younger and more dynamic striker that could challenge Kane, like Ings would do. If Kane get injured/tired/lose form i would be very dissapointed if we had to turn to Gignac!

Look what happened to Rose when he got some competition.

Gignac has scored as many league goals as Kane this season.

I'd like a striker with pace too, ideally one who could play wide when needed, but there is something to be said for a phyically bruising centre forward, who can rough up defenders, particularly in the PL. It's an option we haven't had for a long time. I'd be happy to see Adebayor and Soldado replaced by a quickie and a toughie.

Let's face it though Bobby looks like he's walking in lead boots when he comes on, and balls bounce off Ade like he's a garage wall, so whoever we get to augment Kane is probably going to be an improvement on some level or another.

We need a couple of strikers I think if we are moving on Ade and RS

Unless Chadli is going to be utilised further forward when Kane needs a rest? I wouldn't discount it as a possibility, he has the necessary tools to do better than 'OK' there. With it being far from a permanent position for Chadli, Eriksen could be shifted back to the left of the 3 (where I actually think he played his best stuff for us), Lamela into the 10 position (where I'm sure he's better suited in this league) , and then the right side of the 3 could be filled as necessary, hopefully not with Townsend, but with any signing we make that is clearly being sought for that position.

Remember, I've never claimed to know a single thing about football

The slowest striker in world football, hell no.
Really? He actually has very good pace for his size.
From April 2014 - Burger King named a burger 'whopper Gignac' because he was a chunky monkey lol

It was an attempt to be a compliment. The guy is within 5 pounds of Bony, who is by no means large, but is big for a football player.

Edit:
