This is when a loan to buy would be a good way to deal

Or just a loan to the summer right now to see if he's up to premier league.

Probably not ideal for Barca but better than nothing, gets them a little money for a player they will never use now

I would completely take Suarez now with an option to buy and over Gomes, but feels like every window we get linked to a Barca player and we never get them. Seems he might go on loan to Celta Vigo anyway.

I think you have made a good point here, Barca seem like an awful team to deal with, backed up by @Hercules ITK about the 40m enforced option on the proposed loan last summer. They seem to want absolutely everything in their favour, usually including stupid buy-back clauses.

I think either would be interesting signings but for this reason I can't see either happening, even if Barca need to shift some players...

Don't think Barca would be up for that but it would suit us. I think he has plenty of talent but we'd be better off seeing if we can actually get him performing. He's got a few attributes we're short of.

But if he comes in and does well they will be able to sell him for more. It's a risk both ways id say

Not better than Sissoko? Hmm.

I'm not going to claim Gomes is world class, because he isn't, but in terms of his position and style of play he would be pretty useful in our squad: a technical midfielder with a good range of passing. He's disappointed at Barca but go on YouTube and see how he payed at Valencia. He was decent.

Maybe Gomes is not the answer but IMO we definitely need a decent ball-playing CM.
And this is a great summary of the situation. In the summer some folks were making out that he was better than he was during his Valencia stay. He showed promise, was young, and was/is managed by Jorge Mendes who spent that summer pushing over-hyped but underwhelming Portuguese youngsters (ie Gomes, Sanches, Mario) to cash in on Portugal's Euro triumph. All those players have suffered due to the hype and big transfer expectations but they all have some talent.

We have no area of greater need than the midfield and this need existed before Dembele's influence began to diminish. We have played well and dominated because we dominated the midfield against teams. And even then we could be slowed because beyond the physical/athletic superiority we lacked distribution and guile from that area. Pep made the most trenchant observation last season that went unnoticed when he said Spurs are the best team "when you let them play". People got caught up in the first part. He has since stopped letting us play and has dominated us in his most recent 2 games. We need a better midfield with better distribution.

Can Gomes help with that? Perhaps, but in a CM2 I would worry about his physical attributes but I do think he could bring a more rounded package to the midfield than our other options. But 40M is a lot of money and with that it brings Mendes under our tent.

Look at Alcacer, another whom was outstanding at Valencia doesn’t get a look in. When he plays he tends to score as well.
We should have a look at him as well. He is smallish by PL standards but would leave most CBs in the dust. He works off the ball and makes nice runs. But he made his big move too early (like Gomes) and it was mentioned in Valencia at the time. He was trying to avoid Barca's transfer ban. We should have a look.

This is a great point. I'd be shocked if anyone would watch footage of him pre-Barca and not think he'd be a great signing. Tall, strong, skillful dribbler and passer and can score goals. Just watch a 'welcome to Barca' video and that's clearly a classy player the fans would love to watch (obviously youtube comps aren't the be all and end all but still).

Now there's always a worry that players that have been chewed up and spat out by the super clubs never reach those levels again (and he has been undeniably poor for Barca), but there are also examples like Rafa VDV where they can be superb after moving away. I think we should strongly consider either him or Denis Suarez on loan-to-buy if Barca offer it to make room for Coutinho.

Mendietta, was just a beautiful player for Valencia.

May be the central midfielder Hercules was referring to for the summer.

That's a worry for me if Poch has wanted him all this time.

A player on the periphery of the Barca squad and it takes us 3 Windows to get him.

I thought he said that fans would be excited and it would be a better signing than Barkley?
No hint or clue, so please do not read into it. Imho, he is better that Barkley all day long. Before he went to Barca we would of been chiming over him.

I have to agree with nedley, there is nothing I have seen from this guy that gets me in any way excited. I am hoping its just his agent creating noise and we are looking elsewhere now.

I haven't seen Gomes play for Barca or Valencia but I watched all the Confederations Cup games last summer and he stood out as being particularly bad in a poor Portugal side. On that form he'd struggle in League 1. Admittedly i've only watched him play in 4 games but Sissoko's performances for us this season have been stellar in comparison .
