disappointed to see this link again and with all the other midfield links so far this summer. Whether Poch thinks he should be an option or not. Hoping for something more encouraging next time. Or to see Josh or TOB given a chance.

I mean I think I covered it all in my post... he's had significant injuries for the past several years.

Just think what you are saying is basically rubbish mate, Bale is one of the best players in the world, certainly the best we can even remotely hope to achieve as a signing

At 45 seconds into the film.

He doesn't enjoy what he does.

No. He doesn't say "I don't like football any more". He's saying he isn't enjoying it at Barcelona.

"I don't feel good on the pitch," he said. "I am not enjoying what I am doing. The first six months [at Barca] were pretty good but then things changed. Maybe it's not the right word to use, but it has turned into a kind of hell, because I have started to feel more pressure. With pressure, I feel fine, but with the pressure [I put] on myself, I don't. The feeling that I have during games is bad."

No where did I question any of that? I simply was backing up what I thought his transfer fee would potentially be.

I'm frustrated with this link like many others, but I still trust that we will show genuine ambition in this window. I just can't wrap my mind around how we would have managed to get Poch tied down to a long-term contract and to turn his nose up at Real Fucking Madrid (not to mention new deals for Kane and reportedly others) were that not the case.

If we are targeting a budget-rate CM I would personally prefer that it be a young, exciting, in-form talent (someone like Torreira who's headed to Arsenal, or Fabian Ruiz who's supposedly on his way to Napoli to replace Jorginho) rather than a retread who has failed at his current club and has scarcely kicked a ball in two years -- but let's not lose sight of the fact that Gomes once fit squarely into the former category.

He has (or had) undoubted talent and ability -- he had to earn his big money move to Barca in the first place, after all -- and his problems seem to be mostly mental. If Poch knows him and feels he can get him back to his best, and we are able to get him for a snip (both of which are assumptions I'm making), would it really be so bad if he took Sissoko's place in the squad? Though obviously if he were our primary Dembele replacement it would be even more disappointing.

So yes it's a seemingly uninspired link, but let's wait to see how the entire window develops before we break out the pitchforks.

Without opinions this place would be dead. Take the negative opinions with the positive ones. Some of us post both.

Freedom of speech and all that.

Freedom of speech is fine, opinions are fine. I'm not going to go back through and quote them all but I have seen posts on here already slagging Levy and the transfer committee off because of what? We haven't even signed him, he is just one of a few options .

What you need to understand(and some clearly don't) is that signing one player affects whether we sign other players both for fit in the side and for financial reasons. That is why we have to have multiple options for each position we are looking for. If it happens then is the time to have a go at the people responsible if you don't agree with it, but as it stands you don't even know who actually wants him/is interested in bringing him in. Is it Levy? Poch? our scouts? Someone else??? Yet like I say there already posts blaming individuals based on fuck all.

I have already expressed my opinion on him and I don't think he's what we need, but I also know it's far from a done deal and many variables could change things before we do or don't decide to go for him.

Thanks Trix - appreciate you sharing. I think I saw the :peeking: and assumed we were back in for a guy we'd dismissed simply because he looks like another opportunity. The negativity comes from the signings of players such as Njie, Nkoudou, Sissoko, Janssen and Llorente at a time when we need to be kicking on as a club. It's a reaction based on our recent past form.

Haven't heard great things about Gomes' performances or mentality, so struggling to understand why we'd even be looking at him in this window of all windows.

Here Gomes is on camera talking about how he has fallen out of love with football:

At 45" in.

What is you point?

I get that you are frustrated at the possibility of signing him, I don't particularly want him either. It's fine to say that. What I have taken exception to is you blaming it on the transfer committee. Calling them muppets over something that hasn't even happened. I'd be amazed if you even knew who was involved in identifying the players and most certainly who is interested in Gomes. I mean for all you know it could be Poch alone pushing for this.

Yep his football at Barca, I read it wrongly.

Still doesn’t change the fact he’s been awful though and we should be aiming for better.

I’ll wait till the end of the window to judge whether it’s been a good one or not but I’ll continue to voice my opinion on players we are linked too though

Poch seems to put a lot of stock in personalities so perhaps we think we can turn him around kdb style and get him cheap for his overall potential?

It's the recent past form that is concerning (Njie, Nkoudou, Llorente, Sissoko, Janssen).

The only way this remotely works for me is if it's for next to nothing, which is what I imagine Levy would pay.

And do you now want to list all the good players we have signed and increased in value by a monumental and previously unprecedented amount, or are they only responsible for the failures?

It's an easy point to make.

CM is a key position and I'd like to see us to show some ambition there - Onions, but I understand the reasons why we seem to be focussing on up front and the backline.

I didn't want Sissoko I didn't want Aurier I also didnt want Janssen, just my opinion amongst other peoples opinions. Some people at the club wanted them. Some on here don't want Gomes, maybe someone at the club does. But this great forum reflects many different opinions, people come here to support Spurs. Its not a political forum where you seek out like minded people who reflect and support your views. Here its diverse, personally I think where fans differ are when some are pessimistic, reserved and unconvinced, others are robust, positive and forward looking individuals and so they will clash. But there is room for both types here.

thinking about that, it's gone that mental how many signings of players remotely near the first 15, do we think we will see in the entire premier league that will be less than £10m? how many in the top six sides?

Fact is the "transfer committee" have had far greater success than they have failures, and yet for some reason there are a lot of posters on here that can't seem to understand that.

Any way we are getting nowhere. as I have said before last three weeks or so of the window is where we will do the bulk of our business. Getting upset about stuff now is pointless, there is a long time to go.

The two known targets are:

Barrios - car crash in the making
Gomes - definite talent but currently going through a mental breakdown. Not mocking him but this isn’t going to be something he gets over any time soon

Hopefully with Wanyama staying we’ll only be pursuing one of them, with the other CM someone who can take us to the next level. Otherwise it’s a bizarre strategy to go after a quality attacking player in Martial or Pulisic and a quality CB in de Ligt but to have a hope for the best approach for central midfield is madness considering it’s our current and only area of weakness.
