Yes that pass he played to Dele at Stamford Bridge was just shockingly bad. Some proper BC inspired rubbish on SC sometimes.
Yes, you ahve picked out 1 pass. And TBF that is a pass he can play and has done multiple times in the last 3 years as a MF. The first time he played that pass was the drubbing at the lane vs WHam and Dele predictably miscontrolled but that's whole 'nother can of worms I would prefer not to open. I am not talking about the occasional 'deep ball' down the middle that he serves up. It is a similar technique to his wonderful whipping crosses he used when playing RB. But it is similar to Coutinho's brilliant whipped shots in that they only occur under certain circumstances.

If you were actually looking to evaluate Dier's passing you would be critical of his futile station to station passing that doesn't move the defense/press. You would also look at how many are misplaced a few steps behind the intended player instead of in stride or into the space in front. You would also judge the time it takes him to recognize a pass but then have to hit it so hard that it is almost impossible for the player to comfortably receive it...and that is if the defense hasn't picked it off because it was telegraphed. You would also critique his fucking floaters out wide that take forever and a day to get out to a player that was previously in acres but is now being closed down. Rooney got pelters for those shit balls while on England duty. You would also wonder why he receives the ball with his body closed to play instead of opening his body so that he has options. Instead he traps right, shifts right, and then plays a simple ball to the next guy over. He is not a MF and never will be. But we can disagree on that.

But it is alright for you to think otherwise. Being critical takes work and no one likes extra work. And everytime he gets picked from behind we can both rejoice in his exploits. I look forward to more hot potato in our MF this season. It will be the perfect way to christen the new stadium with oldies but goodies. Good thing it is Liverpool as otherwise we might get away with it.

Strange to relate but I have not read much about a new deal for Dier. He has his good points but he makes errors, all players do, but Eric's tend to be critical. Personally I think he should be restricted to seek and destroy in front of a back 3.

Ball watching is his biggest fault, but he can be indecisive. Look at the last game of the season, a nothing ball knocked forward, step back a couple of steps, control and clear, or duck and follow it back and pass to Hugo. Eric's brain overloads so he does a stop header straight to an opponent, 10 seconds later the ball is in the back of the net . Upgrade required in midfield.

Yup. It all started to go downhill when he started to try and play. Someone has to tell him. It's been two season now this experiment should end.

I don't think he's improved since that first season as a makeshift DM a few years ago. I can't help but feel like he's not really a part of our best XI (contentious maybe, but just my 2p)

Yes, I totally agree. I cannot point to a single thing that he does better now or has added to his game. Like with Harry, every year there is something new to his game so you know he is still on the up. Dier, not so much.

I stated that it has been 'two years' but I meant since his 'makeshift' days. So actually three years he has been playing this position and I would have expected him to be further along. And I was very vocal in my support of Poch's decision to try him there in the Leicester year.

In the subsequent two years he has tried to 'play' and been more adventurous with his positioning and with the ball. I don't think we have benefited from this at all. I think we just need more from our MF and we won't get that by utilizing the known quantities we have there already. Placing Dele and Dier there, neither player comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, will not improve our distribution nor our ability to handle pressure. And putting Eriksen in a CM3 with more positional responsibility will further hamper our creativity.

So, the ITK last night/today was that Wanyama is not being sold. The constant has been targeting two CM, one WF/Striker and a CB.
CB will be a replacement for Alderweireld.
WF/Striker will be a replacement (I assume) for Llorente and Janssen.
So the two CM's will be replacements for Dembele, and probably Sissoko, possibly Lamela/Nkoudou also.
Overall that's a reduction in players, opening up opportunities for the best of our academy/development players.
I think you might be getting a wee bit ahead of yourself there.

Out of all of our potential outgoings (Alderweireld, Llorente, Jansen, Sisso
ko, Lamela, Nkoudou, Dembele) only Dembélé really received any meaningful minutes. Considering the players already in the squad like Lucas, Winks, plus maybe even Onomah and Foyth who should get an increase in minutes an addition of 4 players will easily see all those minutes chewed up. I personally can’t even see how the minutes can get spread around as is without some players either stalling in their development or becoming a little upset. I’m also still not totally sure Lamela or Sissoko will leave as we’ve really heard absolutely nothing on those fronts.

Yeah, not sure you're point is super relevant here. My point is that people see us a top club now, that we have the potential to sign top players. That's only a good thing? right...or should we just point our failures. Cos every club has them.

Yawn. There’s a number of potentially good players that have left there as youngsters because they are not quite good enough. All the time actually. Difference is that Gomes was brought in as a potential starter.

My point exactly...we're not talking about youth team prospects that might or might not work. We're talking about a guy who was/is earmarked to play in the first 11of Barca. This is my point, that we have the potential to be interested in these players. Example, Isco...top player and to think we have had an interest in signing him just shows our progress. Clubs choose us over them lot down the road now. We have to take that as a gooooood thing

Not sure it confirms it's Gomes - but likewise, I'm going to watch some of his older YouTube compilations just incase...

I really think he confirmed it when he said the player has been causing a lot of discussion-which only points to Gomes right now.

I appreciate some of you wanted a stand out CM but he offers a lot more than meets the eye. Yes he isn't glamourous, yes he isn't the name everyone wanted but this guy can read a game. He is very good technically and he basically cruises in games and people don't even realise it. Bit of a Carrick mould. Better than any of our midfielders for his passing in cm role barring Eriksen. He has got a very good football brain. Something we lack at times. Personally would have him over our current cms if it means eriksen has free rein. It's someone else who isn't afraid of playing the ball forward in tight spaces

Far from convinced on this one. Looks like damaged goods having flopped at Barca for two years and falling out of love with the game. Would have to be a real bargain price for it to be worthwhile. Certainly does not meet the 'step in quality' we were going for this window in my eyes. I'd rather develop Winks or Onomah!

If we go for it I'll support him and the transfer committee but seems like one to avoid for me...

Re. Dier it's clear he should have a place in the side to replace Toby at CB in his best position. No huge need for De Ligt imo.

Part of the upset is that we are selling an absolute fan favourite in Dembélé. Not many players that can get me exited compared to him.
