I really think he confirmed it when he said the player has been causing a lot of discussion-which only points to Gomes right now.

You need to reread the other threads at least one another CM has been under heavy discussion.

I've almost certainly slagged him off at some point in this thread, but I find it hard not to get a tiny bit excited at the prospect of signing a passing midfielder from Barcelona.

I started reading this thread getting progressively more and more annoyed as people were bitching and moaning that we could sign a player like Andre Gomes.

Besides the fact that it's horrendously disrepectful to a player that hasn't even signed for us yet, I would bet good money that 99% of the people moaning have NEVER seen him kick a ball, let alone watched him a full game.

Thankfully, @BringBack_leGin rescued the situation and set a few people straight with accurate, actual knowledge of a player that I like very much and would be a very good addition to our squad.

Gomes has had a rough time in Barcelona, he joined for a huge fee off of the back of being absolutely brilliant for Valencia at a very young age. The managerial situation chopped and changed during his time and he just wasnt able to establish himself in midfield that contained Iniesta, Busquets and Rakitic amongst others. As I said last summer, you don't get signed by Barcelona if you're some 2-bit, cart horse midfielder that should be playing for West Ham - as some on here seem to think. He has fantastic ability and just needs to get back to a situation that suits him better and allows him to re-establish what made him one of the highest rated CM's in world football when he was only 21 years old.

Honestly, the snobbery on this forum is out of control at times.

Does seem nailed on to be Gomes, the only world cup CMs there's been discussions on in here that are at the world cup are Milinkovic-Savic, Barrios, and to a lesser extent Kovacic and Modric, and of them Barrios is the only one that has caused arguments.

But he's not at the WC so I wonder why it would play a factor in his announcement. Still, does seem like it's him tho. If hes cheap and is considered a rotation option a have no problem with taking a gamble on him. I would have concerns as I primary starter, but for a knock down price I understand the reasoning. Wouldn't be my choice but of course I will back him all the way as a Spur.

Just a way of putting a timescale on things currently, or maybe we are waiting to scope out the Savic/Kovacic situations before we finalise. Serbia and Croatia are unlikely to go too far past the group stages. If both are non-starters then pull the trigger on Gomes then.

Funnily enough he actually started playing more for Barca at the end of the season so I thought he might stay. I thought he played well without setting the world alight. The trouble he has is that his style is very much that of someone that goes under the radar. He reminds me a bit of Carrick in that he knits things along in midfield without anything that will win him MOTM awards.

We're not going to get someone who keeps hold of the ball like Dembele. Maybe that's not such a bad thing though. Instead we would be getting someone who plays the ball that bit quicker.

Yeah, that would really be the only reason one would assume. Would very much prefer those two.

I hope he comes cheap.

Huge risk if we are gonna stump up big bucks for a player who's lost his way for quite a long time.

Potch must see something that we need in him. I'm not confident, peeps who know him on here don't seem enamoured.

From the limited Youtube clips I've seen it looks like Gomes likes to beat a man as well. I've not watched enough to know but we are crying out for someone that can link up play quickly and efficiently in the Modric vein. If he can do that he doesn't have to be sensational just effective.

Shame we can't bring Modric back again.

Would make sense, it's nice for us to have agreements in principle for players like this but stringing them along whilst chasing something better, I suspect similar is going on with Malcom. We used to be the ones trying to sign players holding on for the big teams!

I just keep thinking of that game against England in the warm up before the euros 2016. I thought he was struggling quite a bit against the english way of playing. Almost gave away an penalty on Walker If my memory serves me right.

Yeah I’m afraid it’s let you down quite badly there, in fact, that game never even happened
