My main knowledge of Gomes is from a friend, Valencia fan, and retired scout (though never at this level so take that for what it's worth), who had tears on his eyes when Valencia sold him to Barca. Yes, he was sad, but he was also laughing too hard to contain the tears at getting as much as they did. I asked last year about him and he described him similarly to how I think many of us would describe Mason, a decent passer but with enough gaps and weakenesses in his game you could walk a team right through him if you wanted but uses passion to drive him to outperform and cover those weaknesses.

At Barca he seems to have no passion so I guess he is not performing at all. To me that has all the markings of a Europa League squad player. Not a title and CL challenging team. If he's cheap and Poch thinks he can work some magic on him then I won't grump (too loudly - no promises) but I will be very skeptical.

So from Carrick to a Europa League squad player ...

Not sure about the player he has been at Barca, but if Spurs were sniffing around the player he was at Valencia most people would be creaming themselves. He was different gravy when he was at Valencia.

I’d add to that that most of us would far prefer to see Mason in our central midfielder than Sissoko (not a dig, I support him wholeheartedly but am still not blind to his failings), who amassed more minutes in that position last season than either Winks or Wanyama.

Also, my two cents, Mason > Winks on evidence so far.

Mason gave his all when ever he pulled that shirt on that is for sure. I don't see the comp between him and Gomes, hence the disagree, but I guess that is the beauty of opinions.

Gomes gives Spurs something outside of Eriksen we don't have. Can't see the draw back personally but I guess we all have visions of what we'd like to see play centrally for us.

IMO Sissoko only got those minutes because of injuries to Winks and Vic. If we could get him back to his best Gomes would get plenty of minutes in spite of any competition, but that is the crucial question - could we rebuild him?

From the limited Youtube clips I've seen it looks like Gomes likes to beat a man as well. I've not watched enough to know but we are crying out for someone that can link up play quickly and efficiently in the Modric vein. If he can do that he doesn't have to be sensational just effective.

Shame we can't bring Modric back again.
He is a good dribbler. Definitely not going go on a run and take several players on. He tends to skip past a player and pass. A bit like Dembele in that regard, just without that freak strength. Technically a very tidy player though. I think that's why he's suited more to that central part of the pitch rather than higher up.

Would really sign both Gomes and grealish? I would of thought either or along with a big strong sitting midfielder more defensive . Grealish I kind of get he’s young English and could improve massively under poch. I’m not fussed at all by Gomes don’t think this league would be good for him and I don’t think he’s a upgrade on any of any current midfield attacking options

You don't think he'd be an upgrade over Sissoko?

I wonder if people watch our matches sometimes.

Yeah, that would really be the only reason one would assume. Would very much prefer those two.
The other possible reason is we're waiting on the player he will replace to agree to go? Not sure Dembele is 100% gone at the moment. Until something is signed then it's the old roadblock once again.

Just watched that 15/16 compilation. Sign him up now!! Poch clearly likes the Sisokko pacey, transition style ball carrier and Gomes can do that well, but also has a range of passing seen in other clips. The boy has good pace. Let Poch show him a bit of love and explain he's central to the team (in every way).

If this lad needs a pick up and confidence you'd back Poch all the way.

Like that a lot, good post.

It's the same reason I'm really excited by Moura next season. Has had time to bed in and got the confidence behind him. For that reason I almost don't want an WF/AM...

almost - if their class, they are class.

I started reading this thread getting progressively more and more annoyed as people were bitching and moaning that we could sign a player like Andre Gomes.

Besides the fact that it's horrendously disrepectful to a player that hasn't even signed for us yet, I would bet good money that 99% of the people moaning have NEVER seen him kick a ball, let alone watched him a full game.

Thankfully, @BringBack_leGin rescued the situation and set a few people straight with accurate, actual knowledge of a player that I like very much and would be a very good addition to our squad.

Gomes has had a rough time in Barcelona, he joined for a huge fee off of the back of being absolutely brilliant for Valencia at a very young age. The managerial situation chopped and changed during his time and he just wasnt able to establish himself in midfield that contained Iniesta, Busquets and Rakitic amongst others. As I said last summer, you don't get signed by Barcelona if you're some 2-bit, cart horse midfielder that should be playing for West Ham - as some on here seem to think. He has fantastic ability and just needs to get back to a situation that suits him better and allows him to re-establish what made him one of the highest rated CM's in world football when he was only 21 years old.

Honestly, the snobbery on this forum is out of control at times.
Spot on. Awful lot of band-wagon jumping on and snide comments in this thread. The guy couldn't nail down a starting spot in one of the best midfields in the world aged 22 and people are acting like he doesn't know his arse from his elbow. He was phenomenal at Valencia and if we can get that Andre Gomes he'd be a real coup.

Gomes (n)... Really worried about our alleged targets this summer. Not the quality I was hoping for at all. We can't afford to carry any more players of the same standard as Sissoko, unfortunately that is all we seem to be linked with. Even Martial, who everyone seems to be wetting their pants over, is pretty meh really. Hopefully there is other stuff going on that nobody is aware of.

And do you now want to list all the good players we have signed and increased in value by a monumental and previously unprecedented amount, or are they only responsible for the failures?

Yes please, from summer 2016 to today.

From what I can see we have made two good signings in that time, Sanchez (smashed our transfer record) and Wanyama (proven PL talent).

I know you are only passing on information but I think you can understand that recent transfer activity has been worrying.

I am actually not against Gomes, grealish or barrios as I haven't seen a single one of them play, all I worry about is why we are buying them.

All three have something in common: they will all be cheap (for various reasons).

I actually don't care how much we spend on players, I want good players, if these are good players, then great.

However after there has been public criticism of our transfer business by an ex scout and recent signings have been less than sufficient then it does worry me.

Maybe we need to review our transfer panel?

Who should we be signing that's more exciting than Martial?

To be honest mate it doesn’t sound like Grealish will be that cheap. We’re just taking advantage of Villa’s situation to snap up a player who otherwise mightn’t be available at all. Safe to say Poch is very keen on him though. That’s all that matters.

I've not seen much of him but I'd say Gomes can pass, control and dribble the football. That already makes him better than Sissoko.
