To be honest mate it doesn’t sound like Grealish will be that cheap. We’re just taking advantage of Villa’s situation to snap up a player who otherwise mightn’t be available at all. Safe to say Poch is very keen on him though. That’s all that matters.

In all honesty Grealish is the right profile for us and should be pursued.

He has lovely technical ability, albeit from YT vids.

To the people who are claiming he was brilliant at Valencia...how many full games have you watched of his back then? I saw someone say the same thing to those who oppose this signing so it will make for interesting reading.

I doubt people follow Valencia that thoroughly

You didn't see him play for Valencia at all?

One thing that this guy will bring that Dembele doesn't have is an exceptional passing range. I fear when we lose Dembele we will have to adjust and adapt in midfield to a style we aren't necessarily used to. I'm excited about potentially bringing in some creative midfielders that can actually make a long pass. It's no secret that in games last season we look back on and choose as our best performances were those against Liverpool and Madrid, where Winks was key. We missed him and the qualities he brings to the team, so having more central midfield players that can actually ping a few balls is exciting.

Whereas, we lose one of the best dribblers in the league in Dembele where he was oustanding vs Arsenal etc, but games like the cup final where Pogba bossed him highlight how we didn't have a plan B to when he is nullified.

Even if Gomes isn't a lot of fans first choice, he is another attacking option rather than partnering Dier/Wanyama/Sissoko together at home vs poor opposition. We lacked in options last season when Winks was out for a large amount of time and when Dembele didn't play, so either way I'm happy if we go for the likes of Gomes.

I mean if you have any kind of interest in football outside of the U.K you'd probably have half-decent knowledge of Valencia and their better players. It's not as if they're some niche minnows no one has heard of.

Fwiw - Gary Neville coached Gomes when he was, lol, ever so briefly in charge of Valencia. He made the comments below.

Elsewhere, I've seen Neville praise Poch for letting him attend Spurs training sessions as an observer, so Poch is likely to have taken soundings on Gomes as part of the overall decision making.

-----------------------------------------

Manchester United legend Neville worked with Gomes when he was the Valencia head coach from December 2015 until March 2016.

“He strides forward and has a powerful physique, making him a similar player to Frank Lampard or Michael Ballack,” Neville told The Times about Gomes back in July 2016.

“He’s professional, he’s hungry to improve, an intelligent young man who speaks three languages. The day after the 7-0 loss in Barcelona, he insisted on doing extra training.”

@H_Lee_M @imc404 Was Andre Gomes motivated to impress you?

Andre Gomes was motivated everyday! He cares and loves what he does. https://t.co/yY4V26M4Zp

I get it, when we've been linked with likes of Kovacic (who I really like) and Milinkovic-Savic (never likely to happen) then it's hard to get excited about a player like Gomes but we need to get our heads out of our collective arses. He will be a very affordable way of getting a talented young player into our squad that has the potential to be so much better. He also represents a shift in tactic from Poch in trying to bring in CM's more like Winks and for all his brilliance, less like Dembele, who let's face it, can slow us down at times.

We've needed more tempo in our passing for a few years and Winks was starting to bring that before he got injured. We have pace with Son and added more in Lucas and potentially Martial (or another like him) so in order to get the best out of those guys we need to be less ponderous in midfield. Winks and Gomes would be key to that change in philosophy.

Beyond that we'd have Onomah who IMO as the potential to be a lot like Dembele. If you've watched any of him last season then you'd have seen his ball carrying ability/strength on the ball was excellent. Equally there's talk of N'Dombele who is also very similar so if we bring him in as well then all those options are still available to us.

I honestly think Poch sees Winks as our future in CM, assuming he recovers fully, and I'd be delighted with that.

@Hercules basically confirming in the ITK thread. Still makes no sense to me to spend big on a rotational winger/AM/forward player and go "cute" as he stated on our missing starting 11 player at CM.

I imagine that some people here are basing much of their opinion of Gomes on the interview where he mentioned he had been struggling with his mental health, which is pretty lame. Rather than ever having seen him play, particularly for Valencia.

Does seem odd we're going big for more attacking mids. I can only assume we're changing formation.

Matrial off the left of Kane and Son on the right?

I'll be interested to see how Dele would perform in a deeper role. I have questions about him playing that role as I think he is best higher up the field. He holds on to the ball too long for me but maybe that would change with a different role. Could also be interesting if a more disciplined role would be helpful to him... Or could be a case like Pogba where he just wants to keep getting forward at the wrong times. Will certainly be something to watch for this season.

If we are changing formation then Eriksen, Dele, Winks, Grealish, and Gomes (swallows own opinion) is probably a good rotation set for a 433 or 4141.

Got a feeling that Alli will be dropped back to replace Dembele next season and we're only looking for squad depth in the CM area, hence the priority being a forward/AM.

Dele was awesome in a CM3 for MK and he played deeper a lot of this season too

I will say this; I am strongly in the opposite category of "if Poch is for it than so am I" but I think this is one of those exceptions for me as it isn't about the talent of the player but the mentality.

If Poch thinks he can help uplift the kid then it makes sense to me. Has the potential to be the signing of the summer for us or a total bust we look to move on after a year.

I do find it a little perplexing that some complain that we don't move the ball quick enough from defence to attack or struggle to break down packed defences. Yet when we get linked to a player who can do this (albeit a player who is having a bad period) people start to throw their toys out.

If we had a midfield of Gomes, Grealish and Winks - with Wanyama and Dier sitting - we'd certainly be moving the ball much much faster than with Dembele.

The likes of Kovacic and Milinovic-Savic are just pie in the sky, whereas we are getting quotes of 40m for N'Dombele. I can see why we are trying to be cute here.

We get the Valencia version of Gomes and if Grealish reaches his potential with us we will have pulled off a spectacular move. And of course it's a risk, but so too would be spending 60m on Kovacic or 80m on Milinkovic Savic.

Finally, is Kovacic really that much better than Gomes??
