I do find it a little perplexing that some complain that we don't move the ball quick enough from defence to attack or struggle to break down packed defences. Yet when we get linked to a player who can do this (albeit a player who is having a bad period) people start to throw their toys out.

If we had a midfield of Gomes, Grealish and Winks - with Wanyama and Dier sitting - we'd certainly be moving the ball much much faster than with Dembele.

The likes of Kovacic and Milinovic-Savic are just pie in the sky, whereas we are getting quotes of 40m for N'Dombele. I can see why we are trying to be cute here.

We get the Valencia version of Gomes and if Grealish reaches his potential with us we will have pulled off a spectacular move. And of course it's a risk, but so too would be spending 60m on Kovacic or 80m on Milinkovic Savic.

Finally, is Kovacic really that much better than Gomes??

Yeah, or we get the Barcelona version who is hiding inside his house because he is too ashamed to go out.

Funny old world if we start next season with Gomes, and Barca still have Paulinho. Both sets of fans would have plenty to share.

That's not a comment on Gomes' ability, more so how it has world out thus far.

convinced myself he's gonna be the silky Deeplying Playmaker we've been crying out for after watching YouTube clips for the last 20 minutes . he's got plenty of power and pace about him too. get his head right and he could be an asset

He seems like someone who needs a manager like Pochettino to help him fall back in love with football. It could end up being a really astute signing if Poch could manage it.

I’m not fussed at all by Gomes don’t think this league would be good for him and I don’t think he’s a upgrade on any of any current midfield attacking options
Can I ask exactly how many full 90 minute performances of his you have watched that enabled you to reach this emphatic conclusion ?

You could say the same to everyone who is claiming he was great at Valencia. Lets be honest, nobody on here has watched him extensively so none of our opinions will be accurate.

I don’t disagree but I just wish people would be more honest that they know zip. When they acknowledge that they might just come to realise that our scouts have watched him a hell of a lot more.

I live in Spain and Valencia is the team I follow here. I have watched all Gomes' matches for Valencia in la Liga (10 of them live at Mestalla), all his matches in Europa league and all the matches he played in Champions League. So around 70 matches all together + around 20 matches for Portugal.

And he is NOT a playmaker. He is a ballmover; someone who makes easy simple passes (mostly sideways or backwards). For Valencia in La Liga he averaged around 55 passes a match and out of that around 7 forward passes a match.

Here is a very typical match for Gomes for Portugal:

How do you see him in our side? Do you think he will be good or a disappointment?

It does seem mostly sideways and backwards, but he never seems to hold onto the ball for too long like Dembele does and I like that. Could get us about the pitch quickly to catch opponents out of shape.

If it is Gomes, Im unsure as to why after the WC as per Hercs info.

Unless we have given ourselves an unrelated deadline just in case a better subject comes along.

I think he will be a poor buy. And you cannot play him in a double pivot because he very bad defensive. I dont understand why we cannot go for a supertalent like Fabian Ruiz of Betis instead, a very good playmaking no 8 with brillant passing and creative. He has 30M euros buy-out clause.

Yeah, with an actual Valencia fan saying he'd be bad I'm now less than thrilled about this. Really think this is going to prove to be a foolish move to go "cute" at CM. It is the most important area on the field and the best teams in the world are built off the midfield. We have one absolutely incredible midfielder in Eriksen and I think he would look even better if we could partner him with a player who is even a really good level player.

Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool, all have good forward/wide players but ultimately their midfield let them down this season. This is incredibly disappointing that Poch/Levy fails to see how important this is to get right and are seemingly focused on forward/wide players. Especially when IMO I think we already have very talented players in those positions.

As posters have mentioned we have seriously lacked in the transfer window since we've become an established champions league club. With key players like Dembele and Toby leaving we absolutely have to nail this transfer window, not get "cute".

What if someone wanted a Spurs fan's view on Lamela and happened to ask Francis Gibbs? Or wanted a view on an early Kane and got a "Championship at best" view from someone who shall remain nameless. Or happened to ask Thinktank about Wimmer to find out he's better than Vertonghen. Don't put so much faith in the view of supporters. We all have our own agendas and biases.

We we're told getting Bale would mean we couldn't improve other areas but considering the players we're getting (grealish-Gomes) I would rather we just spend the whole budget on Bale.

The same was said when Newcastle fans used to abuse sissoko and told us that we're making a mistake by buying him for 30m.
