You clearly have seen him play and don't seem to be a big fan and hey, that's absolutely cool.
You make some very good points in your post and I am in agreement with most. This point here though i would like to clarify. If I am honest I would like 'revolution' in our MF and attack, technical improvement and competition at every position but that is not going to happen. So in the absence of that I was hoping for a player of even higher ability and ceiling to make up for the lack of it at other positions. I don't believe Gomes is this player but he is not without his merits that I do appreciate.

I was thinking we had our money ready to sign a younger Luka or a lesser-heralded all-around MF like Ever Banega (whose time at Valencia more or less coincided with my appreciation of them). Gomes is not this player currently but has the fundamental skillset to be this type of player.

Perhaps all Poch meant by being brave was not having to wait until we sold off players before we would commit to buying? Lets be honest what he actually said could have many interpretations.
That’s my understanding Trix!
Even if that is what Poch meant it’s all together likely we end up making major sales (like Toby) before any big purchases.

It really looks like the only early purchase will be Grealish and that’s a pretty small one especially with Aston Villa over a barrel financially.

I don't know if we need to change system but we certainly aren't going to get a like for like upgrade on Dembele, and we don't need to. The thing that makes Dembele unique is his ability to transition the ball from defence to the final third with close control, strength and burst of pace. Truth is though it doesn't matter how you transition the ball up field, as long as you do it successfully.

Fergie rarely replaced his star players with like for like carbon copies. Beckham for Ronaldo, Rooney for RVN, Carrick for Keane, etc etc. All he did was replace quality with quality and the team evolved to suit.
Don't think anyone's really that bothered that we're not signing exactl replica of dembele but we all would have appreciated if we went for a bigger profile/someone with more potential.Hard to get excited by someone who isn't liked by both Valencia fans and Barca fans.

I wish people would read my posts in context to what I am replying to.

Ndombele actually has similarities in his skillset to Dembele and the way he plays. He has the raw attributes for Poch to coach at a young age. Remember Poch says he wishes he got his hands on Dembele when he was 20/21? He could do so with Ndombele and mould that talent in to a fantastic CM.

Far better option who is much more suited to the Premier League than Andre Gomes.

Dembele on his best day is better than Gomes on his best day. That there is no question. However the Dembele at 24 years old is a much closer comparison. What we're comparing against is Dembele under Pochettino, more specifically the past 3 seasons where he reached a new level in his game. It's not a fair comparison to make really. Gomes has a similar potential to what Dembele had when we signed him (who at the time was someone who had all the potential but lacked consistency). I think Dembele was 24 when he signed for us too and we had similar concerns that he couldn't replace Modric at the time.

What's your opinion of Gomes, Trix? Do you think he has the ability to "transition the ball up field successfully", and is an example of replacing "quality with quality"? Or do you think he might be just one of those (financially) low-risk "mid range" grabs that frees up funds for more important targets?

I have said I don't think he's what we need numerous times in this thread. If he is coming in as the second/lesser of two CM's then I could sort of understand it. If not I'm not convinced he will have what it takes to take us to the next level. Regardless of what anyone believes the motives are for us looking at the likes of Grealish and Gomes etc, I can assure you it's because Poch wants them. No player will be bought or sold this window that he doesn't want to happen..

My point about players not needing to be direct copies of outgoing players, was generic and I thought it was obvious it was not in reference to Gomes..

I get the feeling we will be switching to a formation similar to Englands with a back 5 and to city with a back 4 so can see Grealish or Andre Gomes coming in as an understudy to Eriksen in both formations which is alright by me. I get the feeling no midfielder we sign will be a first 11 choice.

Personally, outside of all our opinions on who we as fans may or may not want, this is the most important thing. Again, just my onion, glad to read that piece of info.

Thanks for the info Trix.

Yeah I suspect the asians games will be detriment to his place in the team for a little while unfortunately.

True, so maybe Lamela then :p
I'm not sure we'll go 4-3-3, I think it's more likely to be a 3-5-1 with the width coming from the fullbacks. I look at the England set up and can see us going with something similar in shape. It would still be a central 3 in midfield though so the same logic applies there.

After reading that Barca fan blog, I think Sissoko is better off..... ? His value is now like €18m or lower. Cheap...

If both he and Kovacic are available, why on Earth are we going for Gomes? Perhaps the answer is that Kovacic won't come to us, but I'd have thought we're a relatively attractive prospect right now.

Otherwise I honestly don't see it
