Think he'll make a more than acceptable back up to Bale if he can add composure and crossing ability to his dribbling and pace. Not surprised he had a good game, he is too good for the championship IMO and is not far off being a prem standard player. Hope he becomes established in the 25 next season and kicks on like Walker, and to a lesser extent Livermore

Comments from Leeds United forum:

'impressive debut performance from Townsend'

'So we defo need Townsend. Played a blinder from what I could hear'.

'Townsend brilliant but selfish'

'Townsend looks class, too good for us to keep once the loan is up!'

'Townsend is a massive gain, a player in Gradel's mould - quick, brave, skillful and with a "healthy" dose of selfishness'

....'we didn't have much of a clue on what to do with the ball, apart from giving it to Townsend and hoping he makes something out of it'.

that last comment sounds just like what spurs were like when we signed lennon.

I hope his form for them continues. Hopefully he will learn from his time there and come back and slot into the squad with us next season. We could be looking at Townsend and Caulker being added to the squad next season which would be a good boost, we could do with a winger and CB atm....shame these two are not quite ready to step up yet!

Great comments on Townsend, can really see him Naughton and Caulker playing a part next season

I was talking to my mate who's a Crystal Palace fan and he said that in the last game, Townsend had the beating of their fullback Sean Scannell all day, hence Scanell ended up being sent off for two yellows (one yellow was for hacking down Townsend.) He also moaned that Townsend rolled around like a girl when he was fouled, to which I replied 'he'll probably make it at the top level then'

We might have learnt more had Townsend been up against Nathaniel Clyne, but it seems that he's a dangerman in most matches he plays so far... I'm really encouraged by him. He has great pace and a sweet left foot. Can play on either wing, and with more experience, will improve his decision-making. Plus he's a die-hard Yid.

There are some highlights of the Palace match here:

I think its for the best he is on loan but at a time where we need a backup winger for Bale and Lennon he could have been useful?

As with all good wide men the test of him will be when teams find out about him and start double marking him, but I think he could be a good player.

I'm not sure if he's ready for the premiership yet, but next season he should be. When a player is good enough to require being double marked, it's fair to say that they're a useful player to have. Nonetheless, learning to cope with that will no doubt make him a better player.

When Lennon was our main dangerman, opponents used to double mark him out of games. Now we have both Lennon and Bale fit and they're interchanging positions, opponents can't afford to double up on both as it would leave too much space elsewhere. This, combined with Ade's hold-up-play is a big reason why we're doing so well this season IMO.

Great post, agree with all of that.

Scored past David Button, who was in goal for Donny. Must've been a bit weird for them

On a seprate note, I'm quite happy Warnock is there now as I felt he did alot for Walker and could do the same again!!

Sounds like Warnock didn't like Townsend from his parting remark. Hope that Townsend does go to Birmingham or other good Championship team. Hope also Warnock doesn't reacty the same way to Adam Smith - Delph has already gone back to Aston Villa (but carrying an injury so might be a good reason)

Warnock's comments only really imply he is a little angry at Townsend for deciding to cut short his loan, not that he didn't like him previously or for personal/playing reasons.

I can understand his frustration, its a player less he has at his disposal and the reason for it seems somewhat pathetic.

Not being able to settle? he's only on loan for a short time for chirst sake and it was a decision made based on what would be best for his development as a player.

Warnock seems to be suggesting the player decided to leave because he heard of Birmingham's interest and fancied that more, we shall see. Personally I am a little disappointed by the attitude that this suggest for a player to be cutting short spells for such reasons.

I can understand him wanting to go to Brum instead, and I understand us wanting him there. Closer to London, better side where he'll have to try and get a place ahead of better players, fighting for automatic promotion, manager he knows (while at Leeds he's just had an unexpected change of manager). I think that him going to Brum is better for all concerned (except Leeds but fuck em).

Yes I agree, that is a better reason than if he just failed to settle, because the point of the loan should be for his development as a player.

If he, we and his representatives have basically cancelled the move to send him on what is deemed a better one, I have no problem with that (at the end of the day this is what loans are, short term deals and we wouldn't be able to recall him without a clause)

The only concern about attitude would be if his motives for leaving were based in any way on his failure to settle at the club or in the area.

I agree with that.

The piece I have a problem with is when Warnick said that his agent called him to terminate the move. Surely We would do that, would we not? It sounds to me like he has heard that a move may be on the cards and decided to get in firts, surely that is not his decision to make is it?

If it has panned out that way, then it is very unprofessional of him.
