Isn't Townsend a left winger?

I think Townsend will be capable across the front three much like Bale - either left to burn the full back for pace, middle to pick it up and take pop shots or right to be a more inverted winger cutting back and standing up crosses.

In any case, would be hugely foolish to sell him now.

Usually is, but in AVB's system he likes to invert the wingers and put them on their off side so they can cut in and shoot. Which suits Townsend quite well.

For the traditional 442 users, Townsend is a left winger. These days having a left foot doesn't have to mean you play on the left.
We've seen his best play not only yesterday, but also at QPR from the right wing as an inverted winger.
Was by far QPRs best player in his first two months there,
and also set a all time Premier League record with the most successful dribbles in one game

We would be absolute fools to sell Townsend. Even if he wants to play week in week out we need to tell him he is very much part of the sqaud and actually back it up by putting him in direct and fair competition with Lennon. I like Lennon and I wouldn't want us to sell him but he is coasting at the moment in his career.

Townsend deserves a chance.

I still don't think there is enough to the rest of his game. He needs to defend more and last night still looked too raw

With a midfield three of sandro, coupe, dembele, and Paul (pick your poison) there is more cover for attacking wingers.

But this convo could be pointless if we get in some of the weapons we are targeting.

kind of weird people saying about townsend being a left winger, i have hardly seen him play there over the years. Yes sometimes but he has said himself that he likes to play right wing and cut in and for qpr all last season he was on the right . He does have the flexibility to switch though.

I'd say to him you're a starter for Europe group games and fa cup do well in those and you're in for rotation for premier league, Shirley that's enough starts for him?

The good thing with Townsend is that he's very good with both feet,
can play both sides, and no matter which side he's on he can still go outside for a cross or cut in to shoot.
Suffer somewhat of tunnel vision though, but it was good to see on his first goal yesterday that he looked to both sides to see if there was better passing options before he went for the finish himself.

If AVB does with Townsend, the same things he did with Bale, and Townsend shows a similar work ethic and attitude as Bale, then who knows how far Andros could go?

Andros is almost exactly 2 years younger than Bale.

Two seasons ago, Bale scored 10 League goals and got 14 League assists in 36 games. Big season from Townsend needed if he wants to follow in those footsteps. Though I would say I think Townsend is about 2 years behind Bale in his development due to lack of first-team football.

A more realistic expectation from Townsend this coming season would be just to break into the first team, though I don't think that a combined total of 15 goals and assists is beyond him.

He's already better than Bale with his right foot at least!

Yeah OK. Let's calm down a little. This time last yr few thought Bale would at the level he is right now and he was already being raved about. Let's just see what Andros can do if he's given more chances. There's no doubt there's a talented player there and with regular football over the next couple of yrs he could develop into a very potent weapon.

Just been called up into the full England squad. Everyone is believing the hype?

Oh come on, Hoops. You're smarter that that. Getting a call-up to the England squad means absolutely nothing. David fucking Nugent was called up to the England squad, even scored a goal (robbed it off Defoe as it was crossing the line). Glen Johnson has multiple caps FFS. I'm not slagging Townsend off, I think you see the point I'm trying to make (y)

One year ago Jake Livermore got called up.
Got a feeling Townsend is more likely to stick around for a longer time though.

The fact that Livermore has an England cap still makes me check the squad announcements to see if I have been called up.
