I know ITK has stated that Martial is "off the menu". One interpretation is that Mourinho has decided that the legacy of the WC means that Sanchez, Martial and Mata will be his only match fit attacking players at the start of the season, and therefore they're not for sale.

However, those attacking options will obviously change once Lukaku, Rashford and Lingard are back. Also, even though Ronaldo has gone to Juve and Bale looks like staying at RM, Mourinho is still very keen on Willian. If that were to happen, I could see the Martial situation changing again.

In those circumstances, Mourinho's preferred attacking 3 would surely be Willian - Lukaku - Alexis Sanchez. Which means Martial would be competing for minutes off the bench with Rashford, Mata and Lingard.

So, given how little time is left in the window, it's wise to assume Martial is "off the menu", and for us to act accordingly.

But maybe, just maybe, there will be a "Special of the Day" late in the window. And we know Levy would be all over it.

Think thats more his general demeanour, not helped by jose's shocking man mangement style.

I do believe rotation is important, but the teams that seem to do well and have won the league have in my eyes had the most settled team, but just been very lucky with injuries. they have just used their rotation more in the cups but kept the main base in the PL

He must be going to Chelsea as the Hazard replacement.

If he's fallen for Mourinho's preseason charm again he's a fool, Mourinho only needs him until the WC players are fit and ready to go.

Of course Ally G may be behind the times, re: Herc's itk, but all the same interesting he posted this omnibus today which other JG seems to against the itk coming out.

Manchester United star Anthony Martial remains a target for Tottenham this summer and is a player Mauricio Pochettino has long admired since his Monaco days, although any deal will be tough to do.

The 22-year-old missed out on a place in France's World Cup-winning squad due to a lack of game time in the second half of the season.

Business end of things now and everything feels (even if we're not privy to what is actually going on) off kilter.

"off the menu" is clearly a cryptic for him not liking the cheese selection when he did the stadium tour.

Man Utd to resist any attempt from Spurs to sign Anthony Martial

Manchester United are determined to resist any attempt by Tottenham Hotspur to sign Anthony Martial before the close of the summer transfer window, even though the striker is still tempted to leave Old Trafford.

Martial has had a difficult relationship with United manager Jose Mourinho, spent much of last season out of the first team and looked miserable at the end of last season.

He started just 18 games in the Premier League last season and infuriated his boss with a series of insipid displays when he was given a chance to re-establish himself in the team towards the end of the campaign.

That had prompted speculation that he would be sold this summer, but the Red Devils do not want to lose him and are set to take up the option of extending his contract for another 12 months.

As things stand, Martial only has one year left on his current deal, but United sensibly negotiated a clause that would allow them to add another year if they wanted to when they signed him back in 2015.

Tottenham have been typically slow to get moving in the transfer market this summer, but with just three weeks remaining until the window closes, Martial is one of their long-standing targets and is thought to be keen on the move to London.

Mauricio Pochettino believes he can revive the Frenchman’s career in London and Tottenham are likely to test Mourinho’s desire to hold on to a player he has had cause to chastise publicly in the past, particularly when his agent claimed he should leave Manchester because of the Portuguese.

A bid of more than £60m from Spurs would make things interesting, although Telegraph Sport understands the United hierarchy are not ready to give up on Martial and want to give him another season under Mourinho to see whether he can reignite his career.

Although the 22-year old exploded on to the Premier League scene following a £36m (which could rise to as much as £57.6m if various performance related clauses are activated) move from Monaco three years ago, he has not progressed as hoped.

Martial’s poor form at club level and his failure to develop his game in England, meant he was also dropped from the France squad which won the World Cup in Russia earlier this month.

Even though he is still in his formative years, Martial has been overtaken by younger rivals in France, not least Kylian Mbappé, who starred for his country at the World Cup and is three years younger.

Martial was playing yesterday in Phoenix, Arizona for Man U in their match v Club America.

It's a very weak squad they have out there and it's getting a lot of criticism

You have to wonder where Poch would plan to play him if we signed him? Otherwise he’d just be leaving Utd’s bench for ours, which seems strange.

I honestly could not care less what he costs, just get him in. Throw in Toby in there and get rid of him while he's worth the big money.

It's clearly not going to happen.

I reckon he'll end up replacing the player that Real Madrid sign to replace Ronaldo. Whether that be Hazard, Neymar or someone else.

Which is fine, he was always going to be a long shot, just as long as we don't sell any players to them in return.
