IF our interest in Martial is solid ( meaning if Poch wants him ) and we dont go in for him it doesnt send a strong message!. especially then if Utd think they can swoop in for Toby and expect us to play ball!. do we actually know if we want him ( ITK ) or is it rumours?

Yes...there's ITK. (y)

Jesus. What the hell is it with people throwing away the best years of their lives and having a kid so young? This is 2018. Not the old days where that was normal. 22 and you have a kid!?! When i was 22, i was at a bar 7 days a week, pregaming with a 30 rack of molson and a blunt with zero fucks to give.

This is where gays have the right idea. If we want a baby we have to order one from a catalogue, after proving we’re suitable to do so.

Much more difficult to end up with one of the little shit machines by accident.

Seems like folks here are generally pro-Martial transfer, whether its in the form of a 45-55 million outlay or a swap for Toby (who may be valued in the same range)--either way it would have to be considered by far the club's record transfer and a huge financial commitment. I keep struggling with it.

He clearly offers something different in the squad in the form of a combination of power, pace and finishing ability, although various players in the squad offer some of each of those qualities. He's exciting, still has loads of potential. He also offers the possibility of being a flexible Poch-type player who could in certain game situations play up front along with Son and offer better cover for an injury to Harry Kane without wasting a bench spot on someone like Llorente or Janssen. He's also deadly and quick he's been on the counter-attack, where Spurs have sometimes looked slow and anemic.

But the only players he could displace in the starting XI, realistically, are Son and Alli. Right? Or you go to some sort of 4-1-4-1...which I would not think would be advisable? Guardiola's obviously done well with Fernandinho as a single holding midfielder, but Dier and/or Wanyama would scare me in that role...?

And we've also seen some limitations with Martial. He's had some really poor performances on the right side of the pitch. Compare that to Sonny, who Poch successfully split out wide to the right in the second half against Chelsea in a master stroke (I thought) that may have won CL football for us. Son has also had some incredible shots and goals in the last year from both sides of the pitch with both feet (the narrow angle from the left with his left foot against Dortmund, e.g.) and I honestly don't know if I can say the same for Martial. Maybe I'm a poor amatuer scout (re-phrase: I am definitely a poor amatuer scout) but the ball seems generally weak coming off his left foot and his overwhelming tendency is to cut inside to the right (where, admittedly, he has an outstanding strike). Hard to see him offering the same versatility in game situations that Son offers.

His best goals are on the counter-attack from the left isolated against defenders, whereas against deep-lying bottom-table teams he has been exceptionally frustrating for United. I would think that alone would offer reason for caution for us, given Poch's possession focus.I have doubts about Martial on the press, whereas you know what you'll get from Sonny, Lamela, and now Lucas (based on the Leicester game, at least) in that regard.

If he's not displacing Son or Alli, I don't know how you keep him happy in a rotation with Lamela and Lucas for the playing time scraps. And his attitude as a substitute not being used properly is piss poor.

I would rather use the Toby money (if there is any) to give Kane and Eriksen massive, Ozil-level contracts that keep them here for five more years than spend 45-55m on Martial. I must be missing something. Or many things.

United career all comps...

135 apps. 36 goals 26 assists

United career Prem only...

86 apps. 24 goals 15 assists

Both show, almost, not too short of either a goal or assist every other game.

Bearing in mind alot of these appearances are from the bench.

He's only started 18 prem games for United this season. Came on from bench 12 times.

9 goals 5 assists.

So 30 appearances, and again pretty much a goal or assist every other game.

Concerns...nah...I'm in.

Wonder what his numbers would be like with a few more starts.

I'm pretty sure he'll want to leave but I don't think United will be too keen on selling him to us

If our options are to let Toby go United and get Martial in return, or let Toby go elsewhere and not get Martial, I actually think I’d rather not have Martial. Toby laughs his way into their XI, instantly improves them, and I’m not convinced Martial does for us.

Would he not force a move? I’d assume that after not being selected he would.

It’s alledged that he would prefer to stay in the PL and not move abroad. I’d say we have a great chance, albeit hopeful.

Maybe things have changed now that we may not sell them Toby. Why should we expect them to sell us Martial when we may potentially refuse to sell Toby to them?

I don't think goals and assists is a great way to compare talent, and not to quibble, but...

Sonny has 30 goals in 99 league appearances and 47 goals in 139 games across all competitions.

Would I bench Son for Martial? Certainly not based on goal record.

One other thing to consider if benching Son and keeping Alli in the starting XI--no good option to split out wide to the right and play off the left foot in that lineup. If Eriksen and Alli and Martial are all on the pitch, I think we'd lack balance, frankly.

Yeah at this point they're not very different players. I think Martial is a better dribbler, but I think Son makes better runs and is a better finisher. I think if we got Martial we would ultimately alternate the two based off form but I don't think right now it would be a big upgrade. I think Martial certainly has the potential to be a better player in the future but he's not right now.

And they've turned to an absolute dumpster fire in large part due to selling their best players to rivals.

Sorry did not read the whole post as tad boring! it is not displacement he offers but competition for places and potential for goals!

Oh...I totally agree. Goals and assists should not be used alone, but I do think it is worth noting his returns considering he only started 2/3 of the games Son did, and featured 7 games less in total prem wise.

Is Son not going away to do national service next summer?
No, interpretation differs but I think he has until 32ish to complete it. He may be called up to the Asian Games which runs from August 18 to Sept 2nd so a holiday/rest after and interrupted preseason means he probably won't be available until October or so.

(I am not 100% sure but I believe the Asian Games are not one we are required by FIFA to let him play in so they can ask and we can technically say no but rumor is if they win he'll have the military service req waived).
