That may be the case, but where do you draw the line?

If the agent, player and club are all giving us the signal that he's available, it's pretty unanimous that we should try.

If the club start titting us around, do we persist or go with Plan B? Based on a pretty unanimous consensus that can be inferred from posts on here, we shouldn't give up and get the "plan B" player. So, we continue.

If we fail, we fail at least trying. With the things that are coming out of Utd, it doesn't sound to me like we are (for example) not offering enough for martial - it sounds more like they are throwing the toys out of the pram over Toby.

All just speculation, but I'm simply suggesting that it's unusual behaviour for Mourinho to do a 180 on a player so quickly, so it'll be for manipulation I'm sure.

You draw the line by saying we are Tottenham Hotspur and you do not piss down our backs and tell us that it is raining!

While I won't blame anyone for being mad if we sell Toby to ManU and don't get Martial in return, some of the attitudes on here towards it being a possibility are a bit much...

I wouldn’t believe Mourinho for a minute. He’s probably just trying to put pressure on Woodward to tie up a couple of attacking signings themselves.

We’ll only get Martial if we sell them Alderweireld and obviously that isn’t a given.

The problem if alternatives are abroad is as the days tick by the more the foreign clubs will see how desperate the English clubs are becoming thus it will push prices up. That's not even taking into consideration fact foreign clubs know they can rinse a bit more out of English clubs due to PL tv deal.

Us and paying over odds just won't happen so it's one hell of a risky game now because foreign clubs don't need to rush, they can chill till end of deadline day as they know they've got an extra 3 weeks to replace a sale.

they also know that they won't get the price they would off a PL team that would buy them 2 players if that's what they need to truly strengthen. if they get a bid from a PL team between now and 9th August and need the money to strengthen they will sell before or not gain as much 3 weeks after

No doubt trying to force the board on Willian

I think if it was as simple as that we would deal but they I believe want Toby but won’t give us martial, they don’t need to sell martial as he ain’t going into his last year of contract like Toby is!!

Jose said that Sanchez, Martial and Mata make up his 3 players behind Lukaku when the season starts. Cheeky bid for Rashford? He'd be a great asset helping to fill the AM/ Backup forward positions within our squad with possibile and needed departures

thats due to world cup, Lingard and Rashford will also come into it, and will he play Pogba as well, one of Mata and Martial will go imo

Precisely this, as his actual quote was mata, sanchez and martial as a front three with no lukaku either. Don't think we can learn too much on Martial from it as Jose's games.

Whoever goes out of Mata & Martial should be the ones on Tottenhams radar then. Both would be good additions

Why would Mourinho tie himself to playing those three though? I thought managers tended to use pre-season to assess who players?

Also, if he is going to play those three (and isn't trolling) both Sanchez and Martial are better on left so one of them will be out of position.

Same with Lingard and Rashford really, they have four players who are all pretty good on left and no-one specialist for the right, pretty poor squad planning and management really.

It seems very clear to me that Mourinho is saying that Lingard, Rashford and Lukaku (their other 3 attacking players) will miss the start the the season as they will have returned late from the WC and will still be ramping fitness back up.

Every sane manager would say the same... imagine if he would have left out Martial in that quote - media would run riot with Martial stories now

Would not give much on such quotes... there are more than enough examples where manager said similar things and players left shortly afterwards

Especially from bloody Mourinho of all people.

The quotes mean nothing IMO. He can pretend all he wants that Martial is in his plans but actions speak louder than words and signing Sanchez was a pretty big action when he already had Martial & Rashford amongst others for the AMF/WF positons.

If the ITK about Martial visiting training ground & stadium site is true then I'd expect him to still be our number 1 target and I'd have always expected it to run til late in the window.
