What's new

Anyone starting to loose confidence in Capello already?

This story from bbc caught my attention:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7372163.stm

Bascially says that Capello doesn't know why English players don't perform well for their country and says that there aren't enough good players to choose from.

What a load of rubbish. There are plenty good players to choose from, the problem is choosing the right ones.

For example, Lampard plays very well for Chelsea but very badly for England, but is always picked, going back a bit (Last World cup) Sven couldn't decide on a striker to go with Rooney, despite Darren Bent being the second highest goalscorer in the league after Henry two seasons running!

We need to play the right players in the right positions, and not accomodate 'big name' stars just for the sake of it.

If that means a midfield of Barry and Hargreaves instead of Gerrard and Lampard then so be it, if it means Pennant playing RW or Dawson in at CB then lets flippin well do it, stop fannying around with players who just don't perform in an England shirt and then site back and wonder why.

But what if he is actually right? Your top players have been inderperforming internationally for years. I see by your sig that you are a Bent fan (no pun intended) but is he really the answer on the world stage?

Not a Bent fan as such, the sig is something else.

But you look at the core players of our team and they have been underfperforming for a long while - Lampard, Gerrard, A Cole, Terry, Ferdinand, Owen, but yet these guys are still the first names on the teamsheet - why is that??

You look at other countries and they try out new players all the time, and i don't mean for 20 mins at the end of a friendly, i mean 6 or 7 full games in a row. The last time i can remember us doing that was with Barry and that actually almost saved our Euro qualifying campaign.

What worries me is that Capello's job is to come in and build a squad of future England stars, not moan about the likes of Lampard and co underperforming.

Perhaps Bent isn't the answer (i never suggested he was) but the point is we don't even know that because he, and many other english players who also deserve a shot at playing for england, have never been given a proper chance at it.

A well-deserved kick up the arse at last?

Perhaps Lampard and co just arent good enough to play against the pick of the players from other countries. Perhaps England just arent as good as they think they are...

no wait, the papers say they are amazing and will win everything, so it must be true.

I said when he signed up for the England job that he was the right choice and I stick by it.

From an outsider's point of view, the England job is the poisoned chalice, it's instant success or sling your hook, which makes it a tough job. Add to that the media with their constant nosying into people's private lives (look what happened with Scolari), it's surprising anyone wants the job in the first place. I would go as far as saying it's the most pressurised job in international football.

You said it right about not accomodating the big names, Capello has had big name players before, he's not afraid to leave them out if he feels they're not playing well/out of form/thinks they're too up themselves, and he doesn't let the media get to him which is why I think he'll be a success. He's a proven winner. Just give him time, eh?

Capello, hasn't come on board to build a team for the future, he has come on board to lay the foundations for the future, but to build a team to compete at the highest level now.

He is completely correct in what he says, we do not have enough technically gifted players to surround our best players.

Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney play amazing football for their clubs, but they are surrounded by world class footballers to play with.

Seriously, reckon Rooney would be as effective with Ronaldo, or Peter Crouch supporting him up front...?

Nothing against Crouchy as I rate him, but you get the point.

Lampard, its clear he isn't as good for England, but then again for the club he has Essien and Makalele to support him, 2 of the best at what they do...

I think he's always been typified as a negative manager, i think in that respect the football played wont be pretty - I have however liked that he stopped them playing long ball thus far. I think the player quality up front is the problem. In italy you have the likes of Inzaghi, Cassano and Del Piero looking unlikely to go to the Euro's. We definately dont have strenght in depth which is why we failed to qualify for the Euro's.

Still a world class team though, I think people should remember we lost to croatia without Terry, Ferdinand, Rooney & Owen, though - and we were the better team throughout the match. We're not a TERRIBLE team - just on the receiving end of a well deserved kick up the ass.

The English National Team neeeds to get with the program and realise that they need to put more foreigners in the side if they want to be successful.
