Are transfer windows a good idea?

I miss the old days when we could buy players any time of the year. It seems insane to force clubs to buy players in a limited window.

It pushes the price of players up, makes the big clubs stockpile players for emergencies. Those players could be stars at mid table teams.

It just doesn't add anything to the game at all.

No, nobody should ever be allowed to sign anybody!

Seriously though it has little to do with the game and a lot to do with creating interest through the media half way through the season. It keeps the TV revenue rolling in because it gives them a lot to talk about. It's called PR.

Financial Fair Play rules have been brought in to try and stop clubs stockpiling players but another simple solution is to stop all loans between Premier League clubs, only to a lower league or abroad.

There are 2 things I would like to change regarding the transfer window:

#1 - Get rid of the Januar window.

#2 - Close the window before the season starts.

Having the window open all the time would only cause instability and speculations all year around and that is something I for certain dont want.

I suppose the OP is compounded by the fact that the transfer window doesn't even close before the start of the season

To be fair though, I'm not too bothered about the transfer window

It stops concerted speculation about our best players - can you imagine what the media would be like if the likes of Bale and Modric could leave anytime during the season?

It would be an actual nightmare. What we saw with Modric and Chelsea and what we're experiencing a bit with Madrid and Bale would be all season long, players constantly having their heads turned and not being focused on the club they're at, it would be awful.

If there was no transfer window the richer teams would pull further away from the rest

I don't mind the transfer window but as someone posted before it should end before the season starts, no January window and as someone else said no premier league loans. These changes would definitely make things better.

I am old enough to remember the days before the transfer windows came in and it was awful. just imagine having the silly season with all the ( so called ITK's, the bullshit media storys all year round) it's bad enough now without have to read and hear it all the time.

Kerist. Stop making me feel old. It's only been around for a decade or so.

But yes, it was nasty. I'd always dread waking up to read if so and so had been poached.

There was a piece in the Observer today arguing against loans between Premier League teams, but we only have to look at how we've benefited from Walker, Naughton and Caulker loaned out to Premier League teams. Yes, there is potential for manipulations to arise, but I think preventing PL loans would be detrimental to player development.

Having the window overlap the start of the season is stupid and like you say it forces the prices up abit, but it stops a season's worth of speculation over a player moving and atleast gives teams half a season with their best player. The top teams would just poach them anytime they wanted without it, leaving the lower teams in the lurch.

Is what Jasper posted really deserving of a mention? Its about as vague as can get.

What other business has a restriction of trade? Imagine only being able to leave your job between 1st and 31st of Jan? Say you wanted to move jobs and decided in December that you would apply for interviews. If you didn't have an offer by 31st jan that's it you are stuck where you are until July 1st ? Unbelievable really.

Bit of a silly post really. I think most professional sports have restrictions on trade. You can't really compare football to anything else.

Yeah most other professions you would probably hate your job. Footballers are truly blessed, how many realise how lucky they are to be playing football for a living.

Not nearly enough of them. The poor widdle swaves that they are. I've got a lot of respect for a Gareth Bale type who has obviously worked his nuts off to improve his game and physically make himself stronger and is showing a mdocum of patience, despite having RM and Barca eyeing him up for the last couple of yrs, and a BAE type who thinks of merely as a job but then does it properly with little fuss. The ones in between; the preening, nipple-dicked, rispeck-demanding halfwits can suck it.
