It also explains some of the bad feeling between fans as they can be in each others face all week now.

I don't want you to think I can't move on or that I am living in the past and I wouldn't want to carry on an arguement 30 years old but, pause for effect, clear throat "ahem" ...."how dare you say Phil Beale couldn't defend" he was the best player never to play for England(excluding jonny foreigners)

Listen man, I loved Phil, but I believe he still hold the record for the most own goals in a season. Eek

Beal was even better after Joe Kinnear took his RB spot because of injury and he came back as a central defender.

Worst thread ever. Rez you seriously need to go away and think about your effort and whether you will ever reach the standard required here on SpursCommunity.

It was too long, had too many commas and didn't once use the word Dugong.

A third rate effort from an increasingly frustrating thread-starter.

But no I don't think I'm too critical at all.

But it's surely the classic behaviour of a person in love.

You can slate your wife/girlfriend/mates, simply because they are yours to slate.

As soon as anyone comes in from an outsider perspective suggesting anything negative about any of the above and in this particular case our club, then I'd expect every single person on this board, on any board, nay any Spurs supporter on the planet to defend their mighty Lilywhite army.

It's because we share the same love that allows us to utterly slaughter them - and I'm not sure that I'd have it any other way.

Fair enough I think you may well be correct and as you loved him I'm happy.

Beal was even better after Joe Kinnear took his RB spot because of injury and he came back as a central defender.

I only remember him from when he was a half back Perhaps I'm not as old as I think I am.

Cheers guys.

Guy's, the 'moaning' and 'over the top' reactions are part (and parcel) of English football....but we are 'branded' with a certain name because not many of todays 'moaners' remember the Glory Days of the 60's and 70's. Nor do they remember the days when Manure were RELEGATED (nor the dark days when we ourselves spent some 'down time' in the lower division!). Although it is an ever changing environment, in the world of football, the class of player (and Manager, DOF etc) have changed drastically. The rich get richer and the rest look on in awe! WE are caught somewhere in between....not yet being able to cement a Top 4 birth but being, some will say, too 'classy' to be mid table on a regular basis. WAKE UP and smell the MONEY (€, £ and even $).
I, on the other hand, am PERFECT lol. COYS!

I think so. Maybe the moaning/negativity is symptomatic of a club which has achieved highly in the past, but not so in recent years.

No matter what we do, we are looked upon as a big club, and when we don't perform (which has been once or twice in recent years) it's always viewed by other fans and the press as something having gone very, very wrong.

But even at our highest heights a select group of clubs in our country and fair few more in europe have had relative lows that reach higher than our highs!!!. We're a fan base that thinks it's better than it is and because we moan like that, what great things we have achieved get undermind.

The whole Jol saga sums up how deluded a vocal section of the fans are and even more so with the board.

We're comparable, argueable perhaps a bit bigger but comparable with Everton. But their expectations and attitude is more realistic and the firmness they showed Moyes under similar (probably worse) circumstances the season before last is an example we should have followed.

good to see some comments from some old timers (and of course you young shavers :)

As Orkney mentioned, and I've said many a time (us old 'uns do go on don't we) even in the 60s Spurs fans were terrible moaners -

Again to repeat myself from many a thread - the Double was our greatest acheivement but it has hung like a clammy hand over everything we have achieved (and failed to achieve) since.

I remember reading somewhere that in the 50s spurs fans were famed for their optimism and wholehearted supported - the years 60-63 seemed to turn too many fans into insatiable gluttons for glory - and I guess we attracted a lot of new fans who having invested in their brand new rattles and replica rosettes, got well pissed off when every year didn't end in a trophy or two.

You're bang on target. In the not too distant future when the Ruskie is tired and Chelsea fades from the scene, their fans will take over the mantel of being fickle.

Are We Overly Critical? YES

Why?

Because people see us spend £30 million pounds in the summer and expect that we'll suddenly break into the top 4.

We don't ever give time for our players to settle in. They have to be instant hits straight away. From this point of view, we'd be better off only signing proven quality as the 'young stars of the future' will probably not get the time/patience of the club or the fans!

Also, like co-incidently (maybe not though!) Jol said in his article in the paper last weekend, it will take years and lots more money to break into the top 4. We are being overly critical as we DEMAND success now!

When we lose a Berbatov, King, a Keane (when he's in good form), other key players, we're much weaker.

Also, when have we consistently won games in a row and gone through a proper spell of a month or two where we score more pts than 1 of the top 4!

The last time was probably the 05/06 season over Arsenal. But in fairness to them, Henry was missing loads and they went all the way to Champions League final.

However, our over-criticisms aren't going to change any time soon so patient people had just better get used to hearing this type of stuff
