This would be me then :D

I don't expect us to 'truly' compete but to make an effort would be nice. And we have the money to do it too. How we've approached this transfer window is nothing short of an embarrassment, almost a disgrace. A couple of signings can have a huge impact both on the squad and on the atmopshere or the sense of optimism amongst the fans. As it stands it looks decidedly poor and there's only one place to point the boney gnarled middle finger.........I can understand the frustration.

But there's still plenty of time, we'll still go out and spend the money and before the window closes, our dad will be a hero again.

It's how you look at it surely? We were clear after Balde and are in pursuit of Ross, a combined £60M odd outlay. We have said we only want players who will improve our team nothing less in the market right now this is practically impossible with the inflation of prices. To compete on the level of the big clubs we need the revenue of the big clubs and with the stadium and naming rights etc we are heading in the right direction.

It's why I started the other thread of "stadium or big signings" which not one no voter said anything, not a peep.

And no I wasn't actually thinking of you :).

I have always been Levy's biggest fan and still continue to be.

But this is not blind worship. I genuinely believe he has done great things for our club and his vision has helped us compete at a level we didn't think we could.

But this does not mean I don't think he has made mistakes. I think we are likely to miss out on targets this summer which could cost us.

I keep hearing how the transfer market has gone made. "He's not a £20m player" regularly gets thrown around.

But when clubs have come into the sort of windfall the Prem clubs have then the extra cash earnt will partially need to be spent.

I usually get frustrated at fans venting at Levy before the end of the window. This time I'm more inclined to agree with them.

Like always I will wait for the window to shut before judging the window though.

Huge fan of everything Levy has done for us up to this point, but he has lost the plot this summer. He seems to be in a state of denial about the way it is now. The market is grossly inflated and even average players in disgusting amounts of money. I hate it, but that is give way it is and if we don't get up to speed we will go backwards pretty dramatically.

He plays the long game and plays it well. Training facilities. Stadium. Top manager. And, like it or not, great at transfers. It's easy to forget that whilst we always miss targets every transfer window and sometimes buy average players, our trajectory has been upwards for the last ten years. Ericksen, Dele, Son, Wanyama, Toby, Jan, Rose, Trippier, Davies, Dembele, Dier, Lloris...all great pieces of transfer business. I can't think of any other side who, over the last five years, has added that much quality to their team, for the money we have spent.

The only thing that has worried me this transfer window is we have changed the type of player being targeted. We still need to identify players who are "up and coming" and turn them into quality. We are not beyond that profile of player yet, despite our league finishes. Keep playing the long game. Our time will come.

In five years, with our revenue from the new stadium bedded in, we will be in the mix every season. Until then...let's hope Poch stays with the project because he is a legend in the making.

Levy is better than Sugar but that was a very low bar. He is better than many of his peers at other clubs. He is no way near as good as his fans would have you believe. At every point where he was required to be bold he has bottled it. His forecasts on player prices have been consistently wrong. He spent money on building a great training centre but then has not followed up with the money needed to populate it with the best youth possible. Most importantly we are way behind our competitors financially which is supposed to be his expertise and this can't be explained solely by the size of the stadium. In my opinion he has done a really poor job on the non-gate/tv revenues being comprehensively outplayed by the likes of Chelsea. I'm still surprised at the free pass he gets from our fans on this. Arguably his first job when planning the stadium should have been to line up a stadium sponsor to pay for a very large chunk of it. He has fired at least one person responsible for this and we still don't have a sponsor. He announced a massive rise in the cost of the stadium due to Brexit induced inflation, yet his boss is a world reknowned currency speculator. In my opinion he is at best a B player as a CEO he just happens to be in an industry with a lot of C/D players so looks good by comparison.

Very interesting article. This bit did make me laugh -

Jon Smith’s book, The Deal, telling the story of his life as a football agent, sums it up rather neatly. “I can remember Daniel phoning at 6am on one deadline day, bursting with enthusiasm and asking: ‘Right, what are we going to do today then?’” Smith did the deal that took Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth to Spurs in 2008 but he and Levy were £50,000 apart when it came to the commission. Levy eventually agreed to pay the extra as long as Smith, an Arsenal fan, bought an executive box at White Hart Lane. It cost him £48,000.
