Arsenal now have the financial power to sign top players like Wayne Rooney, chief executive Ivan Gazidis has declared.

Gazidis claimed the Gunners were entering a new era of "financial firepower" meaning they could afford to pay a transfer fee of more than £20m and wages in excess of £200,000 a week for the Manchester United star.

The Emirates chief used Rooney as an example but manager Arsene Wenger, known for prudence in the transfer market, has already admitted he would not turn down the chance to sign the unsettled England international.

If reports are to be believed then we may see something like this next season:

Gobshite
Sagna Mertersacker Koscielny Montreal
Cazorla Arteta Fellaini
Walcott Rooney Ox-Chamb
That would be a very good side. We need to get our players in asap. Can not be left behind in this window.

Unless we spend big or find a sugar daddy, we will be left behind by a long way, Man Utd will always be top 4, Man City will get better, Chelsea with the Special One back will be much stronger and Arse due to now having money due to ground being paid for will be strong again, I feel as DL willn't spend the cash we need, next season will be a fight for 5th with Liverpool..

I heard they do have £70mill to spend but it includes wages as well, so depending on the player it might not be much

Yeah yeah, who cares? In the unlikely event they do go on an astronomical spending spree, what's new? City have already spent around £50 million on 2 players!

As far as we know, Arsenal are being run with a profit in mind. Stan Kroenke who has controlling interest, seems to just want to sit on his investment. Any huge splurge of cash is no longer a guarantee of success with such masters of opulence like Etihad FC and the Russian Mob Front FC, and I get the feeling they'd want something in return.

As everybody else is saying, it smack of season ticket flogging, and the arsenal faithful fall for it everytime.

In one breath it's 'we have bundles of cash to spend' and then it's quickly swept away with 'But Arsene may not spend it'. I think this is more of a statement meant to appease some of the fans who are making noise about the lack of their spending over the last few seasons.

They aren't going to get Rooney. Ox really isn't that good, the defence is ropey and Cazorla on the bench?

All talk for the season tickets.

I would also refer to Wenger saying Rooney didn't suit their style of play when he was about to go to Man U. He still doesn't - plus Wenger couldn't handle him.

He's going to take a £30,000 a week paycut to play for Wenger?

I'll believe that when my shit turns purple and smells of rainbow sherbet

They say the same thing every year come season ticket renewals. The fact is everyone on the board is making money hand over fist since the Emirates. It's a cash cow, and they don't even need to win anything. Plus, they've got the perfect manager, who still thinks it's the mid-90s and he's the scouting king of the world, and can unearth all the rough diamonds around.

Could be Gazidis putting pressure on the rest of the board to sell him more shares.

They finished above us yet again, ropey defence and all. Any quality they add without us doing the same, means that we're going to be in trouble.
