No, not really. Although having an affair (like Hoddle) isn’t as morally wrong as paying a teenage prostitute for sex- an act made even less savoury when you factor in his partner was pregnant too. I struggle with Gasgoigne as well, not just because he beat his wife up multiple times but the racist comments he’s made. Although if Hoddle was having the affair while he was a practising Christian or more radical evangelist then there’s an additional layer of hypocrisy too.

People make mistakes of course, and Gasgoigne’s wife was always outspoken about his behaviour being the consequence of his alcoholism and mental health issues so I’m aware the world isn’t black and white. Maybe it’s some of the work I’ve been involved with safeguarding young people that makes me less accepting of Crouch’s behaviour so I’m introducing my own personal bias, maybe it’s also the fact the paper that exposed Crouch’s behaviour then employed him some time later. I just feel there’s a really questionable moral issue around his behaviour.
