Allardyce:

"This is the manager's fault. It's his fault. Don't ask somebody to do against Manchester City what you shouldn't do, and you should not play out like that against Manchester City. What do Manchester City do? Press press press. So why do you try and play out when they press press press?

Even the Arsenal crowd cheered when they dropped one in the opposition half. You cannot just force the only way to play is this way in this country.

We are getting obsessed with this stupid let's play out from the back, split the centre halves, either side of the 18-yard box and go and play from there... (it's) utter rubbish to play like that all of the time."

While in theory he might be right, his Everton were 3-0 down at home to City inside 30 minutes. Plus he always come across so bitter critiquing other managers.

He says it in the wrong way and doesn't come across very well, but in general I think he's broadly right, as you say. This playing out from the back and high pressing etc. is very effective if you've got the right players and if that particular style is well-suited to beating the opposition in the given situation, but that doesn't mean it's always the right way to play.

Obviously that's not to say Allerdyce's style is necessarily better, I just think there's horses for courses and all that. Sometimes it seems like teams/managers try and play this possession game out of fear for being labeled a dinosaur but sometimes sitting back and counter attacking is the best way tactically to beat a team. As an example, remember LIverpool a couple of seasons ago. They were battering loads of the top teams because people were taking the game to them and leaving themselves exposed to Liverpool's pace, but the smaller teams who sat back and kept it tight were having lots of joy against Liverpool because it completely nullified their main attacking threat. Playing deep and being well organized and counter attacking doesn't automatically mean you're doing a Pulis and playing for a 0-0 draw, sometimes it's genuinely the most effective way of beating a particular opposition.

I understand that praise for Arsenal is gonna be through gritted teeth but they have more than one decent player. It's futile to start a discussion about the merits of each player and whether or not they are any good but I wouldn't be shocked to see them in the top four at the end of the season.

As for PEA, he scored 10 goals and had 4 assists in little over 1000 minutes in the Premier League last season. A return most strikers would be pleased with I think.

Honestly I’m just interested who these good players are. I’ve admitted Aubameyang and Lacazette both would likely get in other top 6 squads. After that I’m really struggling ozil/mkhi in theory but in practice they’ve severely declined in last 18 months. Ramsey may interest some other top 6. But then I really can’t think of another.

Honestly I look at Emery and just think that he has the same characteristics as AVB, seems very tactical and overly obsessed with the chess piece side of the game and not necessarily the man management, seems a bit aloof and stubborn and looks to be the one that the fans and the players initially try to take to him but eventually run out of patience with. I also predict try to stamp his philosophy on Arsenal too quickly rather than slowly let the players get used to his methods, the playing out from the back yesterday against a team like City with players that aren't capable of doing it just screams of doing too much too soon.

Early days of course but the resemblance to each manager's managerial philosophies and demeanors are comparable.

Just seemed yesterday everything tactically was to the extreme. From the manic high press that was way OTT, city could just play one pass and were straight into their back 4. And the over indulgent playing out from the back. It’s almost like when you’re a kid and you get over coached and it takes away your natural flow of the game. It’s like football by numbers.

Hopefully he'll be worse!

Big mistake. The club - any club - should be big enough to take stick from their fans. Shutting them out makes the club look weak.

the other thing is with Sam's style you need to have the target man upfront to play it straight upfield, and Arse don't have that player. if you continuously punt it upfield all that's going to happen is you will continuously be on the backfoot when the opo pick up the loose ball.

That's one way to do it and the success of high pressing systems over the last decade or so could perhaps be partially attributed to the demise of the traditional centre forward. But I seem to recall some team from the East Midlands having great success punting the ball over the top for fast forwards to run onto - and Arsenal certainly have those!
