If Tierney is going that cheap I wonder if spurs would consider nipping in with a bid?

He’s pretty decent.
That would mean selling Rose first IMO. We wouldn't have Tierney, Davies, Rose and maybe Sessgnon who could all play that position.

Just comes across as them being spoilt pricks. Goes back to what I said the other day. They can’t handle it.

They just need to be patient, which they wont be. Emery did well his first year getting them within 2 points of CL qualification and to the Europa League final. They can demand all they want but its going to take time.

Yes it is a great point that sporting TV rights are one of few areas where competition is so plainly bad news for the consumer. Competition drives up the price and the consumers have to foot the bill.

I'll be a little sad when (not if) the PL decides it can make more money from it's own subscribers rather than selling to Sky et al., it will hurt my employers who have had the rights in Norway for a decade now and personally working on the PL shows is the most fun thing I do, but it will go that way eventually. I think the 3pm blackout is the only thing stopping the PL from making the move now.
Bit like WWE with their network where it was cheaper to subscribe to that than through Sky although WWE shot themselves in the foot and now have a smaller TV subscriber base via BT.

PLTV will be big enough to not need to go via anything, it'll surely be a standalone app and web service. They will then do deals with distributors to make the app available on their platforms, but committing to BT over Sky or any other distributor that way would be suicide. They can also do deals with LG, Samsung, Sony et al to have the app available directly through their TVs and games consoles, like a Netflix or HBO.

I really think the way forward for the PL is through breaking completely free of the whole TV rights game. It's a product that will have no problems making all their money back through people all over the world subscribing directly to them.

Anyway, this is the Arsenal thread so let's not derail it further.

on One hand a feel a little bit sorry for them insofar as they have been sold down the river and badly mismanaged as a club. However this tiny bit of sorrow is massively offset by their enormous sense of entitlement and arrogance that they somehow have a Devine right to be at the top table. Therefore the meltdown is pretty hilarious!

It’s a strange relationship. I have a lot of friends who are Gooners, and a lot of them offered patronising respect for us during the years when we were their plucky, downtrodden rivals.

The shoe’s not exactly on the other foot (we’ve both just been European finalists), but we are better than them, we clearly have a better stadium, manager, owner, and players. I can empathise but not sympathise. I’m enjoying it all way too much.

I do worry that we’re copying their model to an extent. Player contracts and wages going up as we become CL regulars. What happens when we’re not? Fortunately I think Levy has been smart enough to use years of ‘buy when you sell’ tactics to affectively stockpile funds for the stadium, whereas the nomads treated that issue as an afterthought.

Yeah it’s an odd one isn’t it. Their general twitter following appear to be entitled morons (more than ever), but I do feel some sympathy for my mates!

I don’t think we’ll be in the same boat as them, no way levy looked at what they’ve done and thought ‘yep we want some of that’ - the game is very different now to when they built their stadium, money is literally pouring into the club, on top of our period of austerity.

I think we were also much smarter with the stadium build. Hotels, housing, Sainsbury’s, the sky walk, the ‘biggest sports shop in Europe’, the diving tank, the climbing wall, the brewery, the eateries, there’s a tonne of stuff factored in to the place. Yeah it will cost a lot to maintain, but net profit on all of these additional methods of income are likely to be high.

Add NFL, concerts, corporate, and sponsorship of all of this, and NWHL is a goldmine. The litmus test will be if we can still pull in the numbers if we suffer a dip in form over a number of years. That’s the known unknown.

You're perhaps assuming that their current much-publicised austerity is real, and is a direct result of not qualifying for the CL. No doubt there is an element of truth in this, as EL income is significantly less than that of the CL. However, it was also 'accepted fact' that their stadium build meant that they could not splash the cash on transfers, yet there is a large and growing school of thought that says that they always had more money than they spent, and that Wenger and/or the board preferred not to spend it.

There may not be any 'fire' to the 'smoke' that says that Kroenke is using the club as a cash cow to partially fund his other sporting businesses, but I wouldn't dismiss it completely. Since David Dein left they don't appear to have had an owner - or a restraining influence on an owner - who has the best interests of the club at heart.

Their income is down. The current management (playing and non-playing) has inherited a clusterfuck which it shows little sign of being able to resolve; and there does not appear to be any short-term solution to long-term issues. They appear to be fucked - at least in relation to being where their more entitled fans think they should be.

It would take management of spectacular incompetence, or devious intent, to copy their 'model'. I can sleep soundly in the knowledge that Daniel Levy will not go there.

.

What royally fucks me off with this is the last point 'A firm NO to a European Super League'.

4 or 5 seasons ago when they were a shoe-in for top 4, they would have been all over an Elite League. Now things have gone the other way for them they are now vehemently against it.

I thought they had a ridiculous amount of cash in the bank - but have spent the lot and more on paying off Usmanov.

That's disingenuous. If a European super league was created this second, Arsenal would be in it.

I cannot disagree with your point. However that is not the point I was making.

I was referring to the quote to the article where they are now completely against its formation.
