Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has confirmed to Sky Sports News that the club are in talks with West Ham United over Dean Ashton.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the Potters were considering a bid for the striker, who has not played first-team football since August 2008.

The 25-year-old underwent ankle surgery earlier this year and is said to be nearing a return to training ahead of the new season.

Ashton signed for the Hammers from Norwich in 2006 for £7.25million and has made 46 league appearances since the move, scoring 15 goals.

Shame he's so injury prone, like a lot of players may not reach his full potential because of them

I'd like us to go in for him....his injuries have been pretty unlucky, he broke his ankle in training one year which kept him out all season.....that could happen to anyone. He's no more or less injury prone that Woody and he seems to be doin ok now (touch wood).

Ashton has a lot of quality and managed 33 games in a season year before last so he can stay fit....be worth a punt i think.

Good player, could be a real coup if he can remain fit. Beattie and Ashton could be a top half combo next season to be honest.

Big risk though.

God knows what West Ham do to there players.
I'd love Ashton at Spurs wanted him before he went to Norwich then before he went to West Ham, fact is i think we were in for him and he rejected us twice.

He will need to be playing first team football so a move anywhere in the Prem would be good because one would assume he won't be getting into the West Ham side this season, and with a World Cup year he might harbour ambitions of once again getting into the side.

Good luck to Ashton, Always liked him as a player

id love it if we took a risk on him, good hold up striker who just needs to get over his injuries

His brain on the pitch is great too, makes us for his lack of pace, reminds me of Old Teddy!

The chance of him actually recovering fully from his injury problems are so small that I think we're better off looking elsewhere. We got lucky with Woody, and the way things tend to work out I seriously doubt we'd get lucky twice in a row with Ashton.

But he was really good when he actually was fit.

I was surprised we never picked him up when he was at Crewe, he was a real class act at the time when we were looking for young, English players such as Lennon.

We could have picked up Ashton for around £3 million at a time when we needed a hold up striker (we'd just sold Kanoute).
Had he not suffered his injuries, as Blockbuster said, he could have been our new Teddy.

He's fat, injured and shit. If we're looking for someone like that then i'll play.

West Ham should keep him, add Owen and Viduka and have the three do a job share for the season.
