Watford have accepted a bid from Aston Villa for striker Ashley Young.

"Manager Martin O'Neill has been given permission to speak to the England Under-21 star," said a statement on the Villa website.

The in-demand 21-year-old turned down a move to West Ham earlier this week after Watford accepted a £9.65m bid from the Upton Park side.

Villa are thought to have offered an initial £8m for Young, who scored 15 goals for the Hornets last season. <!-- E SF -->

Tottenham were also thought to have been in the hunt for Young and were reported to be ready to offer cash plus Wayne Routledge and Calum Davenport.

Davenport has now joined West Ham on a permanent deal.

Villa boss O'Neill has been keen to boost his attacking options, with Juan Pablo Angel and Milan Baros out of form and Chris Sutton injured.

I know some of you guys may want him to join but think about it's £10 mil that's about £7mill too much. Malbranque is doing really well at the momment and we have several other midfielders unless we choose to sell them even Zieglers still here. Let's just try and get C Davis for 6mill and a player.

If he is the real deal then i don't mind how much we spend on him. But from what I've seen Wayne Routledge had a much bigger impact with Crystal Palace when they were struggling than Young has with Watford.

I get the feeling Young may in a long list of over-hyped English youngsters.

i agree id like to see us get him but not for 10m thats ridiculous, i think weve got someone lined up for definate cos theres no way martin jol would let davenport go when weve got no cover at the back
  4. xzander
Good. Let Villa have him. He'll make a few appearances for England U-21 then fade away. Shockingly overpriced.

10 mil seems like a great deal of money... I say let villa have him for tha money. We're not as needy for a left sided player as everyone thinks.

Just read on newsnow that villa have bid for Tainio, we should snap their hand off, and take whatever we can get for him.

I hope Jol sticks with this attacking style of play for the rest of the season.

I wouldnt want young for more than 3m, and i would want the 3m based on appearances and achievements. Cant believe there is so much hype. 10m ha ha my watford mates are laughing.

I know, it's crazy. I honestly didn't know who he was the first time we were linked with him. What a waste of money that is.

It's not 10 million, it's 8 million as it was confirmed on sky sports this mornin! The boy is worth 5 or 6 but when do you ever get a player for what he's worth these days, you don't so I think this is a real shame. I'm also annoyed that we haven't bit the same amount if we're supposedly "in" for him as well.

Sometimes I wish the club would just keep us more informed of whats goin on with our transfer targets. I've been really pleased with Steed but I wanted to have Young as another good option for our left wing and it just seems like it's never gonna happen!

Yo, Jol & co - (1) Recall Routledge (2) Replace Davenport (3) Get left footed player(s)

It's obvious to everyone that these things need to be done in the next week. If not, we are very unlikely to win anything this season. It's like f*cking ABC, easy as 123!

I agree with most of the posts so far. It is an example of the proce inflation that has recently struck the transfer market. Nobody wants to sell. We should buy cover at LB and CB, preferably players who are near the end of their contracts. We should also continue attempts to buy good young players from lower divisions, since as we see with Davenport it is very difficult to lose money on them, and as we see with Lennon and Huddlestone they may be really first rate.

    Is he even any good?

I've seen Watford play a couple of times this season and haven't managed to even work out if Young is right or left footed! He never seems to do anything and doesn't seem to be able to pass or shoot with either foot....surely not even worth £4mil
  13. YIDBOY
Listen, this lad IS worth thr money! He is genuinley two footed, very versatile, very quick, skillfull, and a dead ball specialist! I think Jol knows his qualities but as usual we're going to lose out on a top quality player because we're too tight! He wants to come to Spurs aswell. We'd be made to let him slip through our fingers, he is the real deal and will go on to be a top player.
  14. tommyt
simple like doe ray me....oh baby

If this guy is the REAL DEAL then why are not other bigger teams not in for him!! I believe we shouldnt be held to ransom for over priced players,i believe Jol,Comolli and Levy know whats best for the club. COYS
  16. beuller
Not Spurs related but I just read on f365 that Glen Johnson was arrested at B&Q on Wednesday for trying to steal a toilet seat.

    I've just wet myself.

I cant be doin with all this "he's not worth 10 but i'd go to 8" and "i wouldnt pay 7 but he's worth 5" ffs people, cmon, if there is a player who can solve our problem possitions then you can not put a value on him. Look for example at Manure, they buy 1 right player a year for 16/20/30 mil they dont buy 5 or 6 mediocre players and gambol on what there going to be like, they sepnt 16 mill on Carrick for the keane role and that will be that for the next 8 years.

Ashley Young, whatever he is priced at, IS NOT what we need to be buying right now, we have cups to play for still and 'young prospects' are not going to help us right now, we need an experienced CB and a quality LW in before anything else and before anyone says Young is a LW, he isnt, he's ok at it like Lennon or Routledge but thats not his possition.

Identify the problem and buy the solution and dont be out priced!
  18. MJsDeputy
but Man U's ground capacity is 75,000 - Spurs, almost half of that... this alone reps 30 mil diff.

Man U is valued at 600-800 mil...Spurs may be 1/5 of that (if we are lucky)
  19. claphamspur
Who would we drop to accommodate Young? Malbranque is getting better and better IMO, Lennon is automatic choice on the right and the centre is between Huddlestone, Jenas, Zokora and Taino. We just don't need him, at least not at the present time.

A quality left back and centre back to replace Davenport. That's what would make the difference right now.
