After Mourinho’s undoubtedly worst week at Spurs, he travelled to the midlands to face Aston Villa. A poor showing away at the Emirates followed by a European place thrown away rather embarrassingly left Tottenham low in confidence and form. Aston Villa also down in confidence with star man Jack Grealish still absent. Two 0-0 stalemates for Aston Villa in the league meant they were also lacking form. Both teams seeking Europe. Both teams needing the points. Both teams fighting for the win. It is certain that both sides would have to change something to gain anything from the game; Villa needing to be more clinical and Spurs needing solidity at the back.
A plethora of unexpected starts for the North London outfit – Tanganga, Rodon and Vinicius. Jose planning a new approach to this match. An attacking start from Mou’s men, tidy one touch passing before someone (typically Kane) spreading the play. Villa looked tidy at the back, though, and Matty Cash was given a lot of work from the get-go. The return of Hojbjerg to the side and first start for Lo Celso after injury meant that the Lilywhites looked a lot more organized in the centre of the park. Ndombele was also pushed deeper and played in that pivot. Harry Kane was leading the line with Vinicius alongside and Brazilian teammate Lucas Moura tucked in behind. Plenty of darting runs from Lucas kept Mings and Sanson occupied. Aston Villa took a much more direct approach, attempting the longer and lofted passes. Few of which called the Tottenham skipper into action. Aston Villa quickly took control of the game, constantly bombarding the Tottenham penalty area with crosses and pressure. The tables turn quickly, though, a poor clearance after Emi Martinez rushes out. Lucas Moura nicks the ball, plays into Kane’s feet for a one-two and squares it for a Vinicius tap-in. 0-1. A goal started and crafted by the lightening quick Brazilian. The goal seemed to slow down the tempo of the game with both sides taking their foot off the gas. Tottenham looked shaky on their left side with the Spanish full back being much more refined in his attacking game than defensive on the night. Ndombele and Moura continued to impress in the first half, both of which producing moments of magic and very positive ways of play. 0-1 at the break.
Work to do in the second half for both teams. Whilst Aston Villa were the dominant team, Tottenham found themselves in front. Reguilon sacrifices himself in a challenge to get the ball to Moura. He finds Kane who fires towards goal but a slight deflection from Mings pushes the striker’s effort narrowly wide. Sergio Reguilon found himself replaced by his Welsh counterpart in Ben Davies after a sustained foot injury during the game. Aston Villa began to find their feet once again as Morgan Sanson repeatedly made dangerous runs down the throat of the Tottenham right back. He produced some impressive crosses and cut backs but all were dealt with by the Spurs defence. Dean Smith was quick to bring on El Ghazi who was also quick to make an impact. A thunderous strike from the Dutchman towards the top left corner of Lloris’ net hits the side netting as the team in claret and blue maintain a steady stream of attacking football. Mourinho’s defence seemed to be a lot more comfortable than in recent weeks as Sanchez and Rodon became dominant in the air and made a series of vital challenges. Lo Celso made way for Steven Bergwijn with around 25 minutes left to play. Mourinho clearly saw fit to replace the already booked Argentine. Soon after kane gets played the ball down the left-hand side and prepares to cross but Matty Cash clumsily flies into the number 10 and takes him down, conceding a penalty. Harry Kane takes the penalty and you know what happens next. 0-2 to Spurs. Aston Villa had 20 minutes to do what took Dinamo Zagreb 120 minutes to do and overturn a 2-0 deficit. 10 minutes left of regular time; Tanguy Ndombele was replaced by fellow Frenchman Moussa Sissoko. A long-awaited yellow card for goal scorer Carlos Vinicius after constant nicks and shoves into the opponents. Few objections as Lucas Moura picks up the MOTM award after a busy and rather slick performance. As per usual, a strong finish from Tottenham sees them hold on to their 0-2 lead and come away with all three points. A very important win for Spurs and perhaps even more importantly, a clean sheet. Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur.

No offence mate, but these are really annoying on the front page when looking from my phone?
