Spurs appear to be backing away from any deal to sign Stephen Appiah after they put the finishing touches to the transfer of Wilson Palacios from Wigan Athletic, a £12m deal revealed by TPC before it broke publicly last week.

Harry Redknapp has discussed Appiah with all of his coaching staff for their opinions on the Ghanaian midfielder but the overriding problem is still his fitness after almost 18 months out of the game. Appiah performed admirably in the closed-door match against Grays Athletic last week but had to leave the field towards the end after suffering from cramp.

And with Palacios confirming his move to White Hart Lane, after we were forced to up his wages following a counter bid from Wigan, it could be that Spurs feel Appiah would be a risk that they no longer need to take. The midfielder is unhappy at Spurs’ delaying a decision on him and is looking at other options despite still training with the club.

How can a club counter bid for a player they already have :duh:.

I think that Appiah would be awesome for us, a player of his caliber coming for free is exactly what we've been crying out for.

Time and time again I feel that other clubs put in the effort to find cheap quality, yet we are prepared to pay over the odds. He could be like Davids - a huge name, requiring large wages, but on a free. The youngsters would benefit so much.

Since Arnesen left we have paid top dollar for players, yet Wigan spent a total of 770k for Zaki and Palacios (the former being on loan). They also got Valencia on the cheap. The ast steal we made was Lennon at 1million and Carrick at 2.75.

Those were the days. Don't get me wrong I am very happy to have Palacios here, but Appiah is FREE!!!!!

Gotta agree with sebo-sek, even for a short term deal seems like a no brainer, after all Palasios cant play every single game, and as was highlighted last night, we have a growing injury problem.

But he's not free if your paying his wages and he isn't playing.

Think Wigan offered him an improved deal to stay

If Appiah isn't fit enough to be able to make a fairly instant impact, then he proabably wont be taken on. But even if he is fit, the management should probably only take him on if they can ship a couple out. I'd judge Harry as much on who leaves as who comes in. He needs to tighten up the squad and adding another central midfielder wihtout clearing another out doesn't make sense.

Ghaly should get a chance this weekend. If he doesn't, let the fella go. He's a decent player whose career we're trying to ruin.

ghaly has gone me thinks, to a saudi club

Ghaly is gone today so that leaves some room, I must say I think we should take Appiah now. Last night was the worst ever.

Appiah could provide some bite that we are sadly lacking in midfield. Surely the risk of going down outweighs the wages he'll be on

i've been thinking for a while harry has been double banking his signing's. we've got appiah training and ready to go if xxx (palacios:shrug:) doesn't sign. maybe that quincy fella is training in case he cant get so and so? very clever if he has!

I understand from reports that Appiah had to (or was) taken off during trial game. If he has a fitness problem, we don't want him, even for free.

It says exactly that in the story that you are replying to.

"Appiah performed admirably in the closed-door match against Grays Athletic last week but had to leave the field towards the end after suffering from cramp."

So we all also "understand from reports".

Whats the use signing a player on PL wages if he hasn't played for 18 months, will take weeks to get anywhere near fit, and even then will only be backup as we've just signed Palacios and have Zokora, Thudd & Jenas fighting for CM places as well.
  12. samsonlevi
I dont understand why ppl on here are so worried about the wages.
    IT ISNT OUR MONEY!
if signing him means we get 1 extra point this season then surly its worth it.
as long as the club doesnt do a leeds i dont care how much they over pay for a player as long as he performs and we are a club who has to take risks. By my calculations this guy isnt that much of a risk if we are just paying wages and not a £10 mil fee too.
  13. mawspurs
Apparently he was going to be on a pay-as-you-play deal so I can't see any reason not to take the gamble. We have Palacios now so it would give us time to get him fit and when the latter stage of the season hits us and we need extra bite in midfield he would there on tap.

If Appiah was signed on a 6 month contract on 70k p/w wages, that's the best part of £2 million resting on him being Premier League standard. That's a lot of money for a "free" signing.
  15. spurs_viola
Appiah deal probably depends on one more central midfielder leaving. Whether it is Jenas is to be seen, but most logically it is his place most at risk with Palacios arrival and especially if Appiah signs too.

And if it is true that we are talking a pay-as-you-play deal, then surely the risks are minimal, even if we don't manage to off-load another CM this month. Having not played for over a year and with his injuries history, Appiah cannot demand a very high package.

But the left side of midfield is more of priority now, with none of current players good enough to provide consistent quality there.

If he is fit, in the sense on injury free, he can soon get his body into shape so he doesn't get cramp, and if he is not demanding a signing on fee, I can't see the risk in signing him. Palacios is the risk. We've paid a lot of money for him and he may not justify the fee.

Its a strange one? Ziggy's right he's not free... WAGES, but then i was thinking what happens if he's still not fit until the beginning of next season? would it still be worth it...the prices we get quoted for transfer fees seem to start around 10 mill, maybe taking all that into account it might be worth taking a punt, we could have a player worth a few million without having to pay the few million? But then we get on to the otherside of Appiah....Injury & Fitness, surely he had some kind of medical before Spurs let him even train with them? the guys been bought & sold for millions of pounds, if the coaching staff lets just say get him doing something that is not beneficial to his well being, and he goes down with the same old injury...well in this day and age where there's blame..There's a claim! The story i heard is he played okay against Grays but towards the end of the game had to come off with cramp, nothing in that for me, 18 months out & there is a massive difference between being fit & being match fit, it takes time. if its still the knee i could totally understand the chairman having his own thoughts especially with the King situation ongoing, but surely Spurs doctors or medical have checked this out? If he has got a problem with an old injury....why...If reports are correct is he still training with Spurs, I suppose we will have to wait and see.
  18. SpurSince57
Trouble is, the best-case scenario could be that we'll have another Gilberto situation, with him not being even partially match-fit for another month or so. That's a very big decision that's easy for us on a message-board to take, not so easy for the people who have to take it in real life.

    appiah

Appiah went to the African Nations Cup with Ghana though he was injured and they knew he would not play! His presence and leadership was so important to them. We are in need of leadership and a presence in the middle of the park - even if he can only come off the bench.
