Gareth Bale has stalled on the offer of a one-year contract extension, prompting disagreement on Southampton's board over whether they should sell the Wales international. Saints have turned down bids in the region of £5m from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, but they are disappointed that the 17-year-old has not yet extended his existing contract which runs until 2008.

Senior sources at St Mary's fear they could eventually be left in a weak negotiating position if Bale decides he wants to leave and his contract has been allowed to run down. Having nurtured Bale through the academy, Southampton do not want to risk losing him cheaply. They remain hopeful that he can be persuaded to sign a new contract by the end of the week, although the indications from the Bale camp are that this is unlikely.

Southampton's manager, George Burley, regards Bale as vital to the club's hopes of promotion to the Premiership and is desperate to keep him at the club until at least the end of the season. Bale, himself, has indicated that he currently does not want to follow his former academy room-mate Theo Walcott into the Premiership.

He is understood to be happy to stay with Southampton, where he will play regular first-team football, and review the situation in the summer. If Southampton do decide to sell, United would appear to be in pole position, although Arsenal and Liverpool are also believed to be monitoring developments.

Bale has been the driving force in Southampton's promotion push this season, scoring five goals from left-back. Last year, he become the youngest-ever Wales international and is tipped by Burley to have the ability to become the best full-back in Britain.

Please please please, he's the only player on my shopping list for this transfer window. Anyone who hasn't seen him look up his name on 'Youtube' and remember he's only 17!!! I'm happy with the squad but would be delighted with it if we had him.

We can afford to let the odd player leave (Davids, murphy, stalteri, etc) although probably better to wait til the summer because it looks like we'll have a fixture congestion problem in the not to distant future - YES!!!:hump: :hump: :hump:

He's a free kick monster on a par with Beckham but does anyone know how good he is in open play on the ball ?

I'm sorry everyone, but I really cant get excited about this one....not because I dont want to (I do!) but I dont want to suffer the disappointment when he doesnt come to us... I would love to be made to eat my words but, seriously, as much as I love Spurs I cannot see us competing when the likes of Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool and even Chelsea will be in for him. We could argue that we "nurture" the young players bought by u (Huddlestone, Lennon, and so on) but so do Man U and, I'm afraid, so do Arsenal and both teams can offer Champs Lg football this season and, also, next season.....we cant, and for next season, dont think we will be able to do that then....shame - would love to see him tearing down the left and his freekicks......oh no, now I'm allowing myself to get excited!!! I must stop this, stop this now!!!!! :)

I do not see us getting Bale. I wish we could, but in this case I have to be pessimistic.
  5. Duff
Why do we want another left back, Lee Pyo, is one of the most talented and commited players the club has

Ok thats 3 strikes. You're obviously a wind up merchant.

    Duff, Duff, Duff

Think you need your head examined, dear boy. I can't believe you're not trying to take the piss. There's no way in a million years LYP is going to be a leading left back in the Prem. He's only back in the side cos Benny needs more time to adapt to the Prem (aptly demonstrated by a couple of poor performances).

We ain't gonna break into the top 4 with LYP at left back.

Is Duff on something, if so why isn't he sharing

    Our chances

It is difficult to compete with ManU and other top notch teams. Although, I think we might have a better chance than some suggest -- although we have hurt our chance with some poor form as of late.

On the positive, Bale would know he would stand a good chance to come in and make an impact right off the bat, due to Spurs particular shortcomings down the left.

Our presence in Europe is a boon and positive sign, as is the recent extensions for other Young England comers, Huddle and Lennon.

Were we about 5-8 point implroved in the league, I'd say we would be close to par whan competing with the rest of the SOBs. Alas, when it comes down to it, a young player on the edge -- conventional wisdom will guide him to one of the big four, with all offers being cose to equal. Still, I think we have something to offer.

Duff if LYP is one of the most talented players we have at the club then we have problems...

Could be a very good signing for us - at the right price.
Some of the quoted figures for this player are way to high for a 17 year old who is not proven at Prem level and is only into his first season. To many players have been quoted as the next big thing and have gone on to do jack. ( hate to name Chelsea players but Johnson Wright-Phillips and Bridge come to mind)
They might have the money to waste but we don't.

On the plus side he knows our youth policy and most of the top teams already have two left backs of a decent standard.

Good addition but not at £9M that has been quoted - we only paid £11M for Berbs !!!

Yes he might be talented and committed but the problem we have is he is not a natural leftback, he is right footed, would perfer to see him playing on his natural right side, maybe backup for Chimbonda and Lennon, do need a natural leftback, shame we lost Edman, who was a great defender for us. Would love to see Bale come to Spurs, but with Man U in the frame, they may offer him to Southampton for a season or two, where we need a left back urgently or we will not qualify for Champions league. Come back Matt Taylor, you know where your heart is Tottenham Hotspurs.

I'm hopeful but not expectant. I would not put it past us to get him but like everyone says he's more likely to go elsewhere. One worry I do have is that we don't really have any Welsh lads, Man U have Giggs who I would guess is probably the young lads idle. Surely couldn't be a better mentor for him?!
