The 28-year-old will discuss his future this week and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be struck to bring him back to north London.

Still only 28?
I mean Real would be mad to let him go after that final, but if he's willing to be reasonable with money, it's a no-brainer.

A couple of seasons in our new stadium and a some domestic success of sorts and we may be in a position to sign someone like Bale. But I really cannot see this happening.

At 28 he represents a risky investment with his recent injury record and whatever pay cut the article reckons he will take is still likely to be an astronomical wage for us.

Whilst he rose to significance with us and had 6 years at the club, he’s not a boyhood Spurs fan nor has he ever said he’d like to come back. I’m sure there’s a soft spot for Spurs but he’ll move to a club where he thinks he’ll win things.

If he thinks he will do that at Spurs he may come back but I don’t think we’re quite there yet.

From the article:

Sources close to Bale say he would also be very open to a return to Spurs

"Sources close to" means either his agent, or Bale himself.

I think people underestimate the lifestyle choice in all this. Bale's a homely type. A down to earth guy at the end of the day. Maybe he wants to lower the pressure on himself, return to somewhere familiar, and is thinking about where his wife and child would be happiest. I don't think enough account is taken of stuff like that versus the financial implications in a decision like this.

Could just as easily mean 'We made it up but without naming names, nobody can question our source'.

For Bale to come to Spurs he'd have to take a massive pay cut probably matched wages with Kane's also Real Madrid asking price would have to be what we could stretch, I think we could get to 55-60M

No it doesn't. It could mean anything.

Nope. "Sources close to..." is boilerplate hack-speak for Bale or his agent. Whether that source is telling the truth or not is another matter, but it's almost certainly a real source.

You've got to remember the context - all this information is being leaked to the press to secure the best deal possible for Bale. As such, he and his agent would be highly motivated to say things like this to the press. As I say, it may not be true what they say, but it makes complete sense that they'd be saying it.

By contrast, there's very little motivation for the Independent's chief football writer to make up a quote. Not only would it be tabloid-style unethical, it'd also be a stupid & worthless little thing to compromise your credibility over. Also, if it's made up, the writer is burning good will with Bale and his agent, who'd know the quote was BS.

No, this quote is almost without doubt from a real source imo.

Wishful thinking.

60M? For a 28 year old? With Bale's injury record? No no no no no. I'd love him back, really, but we just don't have that money to risk on anyone.

60m for one of the best players in the world at 28 is an absolute bargain in the current transfer climate.
