60M? For a 28 year old? With Bale's injury record? No no no no no. I'd love him back, really, but we just don't have that money to risk on anyone.
60m for one of the best players in the world at 28 is an absolute bargain in the current transfer climate.

He said he had an injury at the start of the season missing 6 weeks, but has been fit and able to play all season since. It's been down to ZZ and RM that he hasn't played.
He hasn't been injured as much as people make out.

This season. Also how much has that improved injury record been because, as you state, that he hasn't been played as much?

He's 29 in July. He was fantastic for us, and of course it would be nice to see him in our kit again. But we have limited finances and we should invest in younger players with more sell on value and potential.

I've watched a lot of Madrid over the past few seasons and he's been good but not great. Any decent forward will score goals there. His goal in the CL final was incredible but I honestly don't think he's in the top ten players in the world right now. And getting the shit kicked out of him every week in the PL wouldn't help his injury record.

I'm sure I'll get down voted but just my opinion.

Despite my post above rather cynically suggesting a Bale return very unlikely - from a financial perspective in fact it’s not as risky as some make out.

Aren’t there statistics floating about that much of C.Ronaldo’s transfer fee almost entirely being recouped early on just through shirt sales?

If we were to sign Bale there’d be a number of positive effects financially despite the outlay; shirt sales, sponsor attractions to fhe club (though primarily Bale himself), raise the profile of the club massively in european standings, confirm us as “serious” contenders as well as new supporters (just look at the Son, Alli and Kane effect on young fans coming to games).

But it could also create some disharmony in the squad in terms of competition for places and salary envy.

Also, “sources close to” in now way confines it to Bale or his agent. It could really be anyone who has conversations/interactions with Bale now and then. From the Madrid Dining Hall Lady to his wife’s mate from their daughter’s school...

Would be amazing but it seems unlikely at present.

Genuine question. Do you think the likes of Kane, Alli and Eriksen will hang around forever whilst this potential slowly comes to fruition?

We’ve done superbly well to be in the position we are, but imo we are nearing the point of diminishing returns as far as results on the football pitch are concerned. I’m not sure the model of always considering potential sell on value is aligned with getting us past where we are now.

Every transfer is a risk. How much money have we wasted on the likes of N’jie, N’Koudou, Jansen, Llorente and Sissoko ( who was also 28 btw) to name but a few?

We won’t get Bale because I just can’t see his wage demands falling by over half or Real letting him go for anything but a crazy fee, but if he’s available even for say £60-70m it’s a risk worth taking.

He’s an elite player, and we haven’t been able to sign a ready made elite player since Klinsman when the football world was very different.

If what the report says is true, Baldy will have to even pawn his knickers to get him home.

I agree with your general sentiment. I don't think our top players will hang around forever. But I think if we were to spend Bale-esque money and wages, we should go for someone younger with a better injury record.

No, this is an enduring myth that it ever happens.

"No club has ever directly recouped a player’s transfer fee through shirt sales. Adidas, Nike, Puma and other kit suppliers get 85-90% of shirt sale revenue and this is the industry standard."

Probably the footballer with the highest stock at the moment so why would he take a £150k a week pay cut lol
For the love of playing for us? When you're as rich as he is a 150k pay cut is barely noticeable. He never has to worry about money again so I don't see why not.

Fair enough, but I think his injury record has been overplayed. Unless I'm mistaken there's been no knee surgery, serious hamstring injuries etc. A lot of recurring calf and ankle injuries which could just be rushing back too quickly etc. I certainly don't think it's a Dembele situation where his body can't hack it.

Vertonghen seems to have ankles like jelly, but I don't think anyone would bat an eye lid if he got offered a huge new contract by us.

Anyway, I can't see him being available for anything but silly money so I doubt there will be anything for us to seriously consider.

It's a fairly simple maths equation to prove this is correct.
Let's say a replica shirt with Bale on it costs £60 (it's probably more but let's use £60)
Let's be optimistic beyond reason and say we sell 350,000 of them.

£60 x 350,000 = 21,000,000
If we took every penny it would be a third of his fee.
We can't take every penny as they don't come from nowhere, there's costs. Then tax, expenses on staff selling etc.
Then drop in whatever percentage Nike take from the deal, no matter how small or large, we're not left with anywhere near enough sales to recoup it.

I wish someone else would hurry up and sign him. Yes he's a very talented player. But he didn't even work hard enough without the ball in a Redknapp team, and Zidane has had exactly the same issues with him (exacerbated by having to accommodate Ronaldo's work ethic of course).

I don't want us to be a galactico team. I'd much rather we looked at a player who's very good, but slightly less gifted than world class, who actually fits the group ethos, and we try to get back to being about the collective again. As it is I think as good as players like Alli and Son can be, their deficiencies without the ball are compromising us, and it's spread to people like Kane, who now works about half as hard as he used before he was canonised.

I've not seen him play at all this season, apart from the final.
Has he still got that acceleration to leave defenders in his dust?

Yes, he's still got it whereas CR seems to have lost two steps, not one, on the basis of the CL Final.
